Stealth/hobo camping, anyone ever do this?
Stealth camping? First I've heard the term. In the 60's just pulling off in the woods or a parking lot jsut laying next to the bike was nothing special. Bad weather, sometimes found a small town rundown motel (when most of those were just tiny cabins lined up & you'd park between them) where they'd take 7 or 8 bucks & you'd be the only guy there. Once another guy and I had a gas station owner let us stay the night (when they had service bays). Locked us in the bay, was back real early in the morning to open up, that worked real well. A guy that went out of his way for a couple vets, didn't get that much back then. On a New Year's trip, stopped a night in Austin Texas, slept in an outside stairwell on a dorm at the University (was deserted for the holiday); piled up a bunch of loose newspaper to sleep on, and in my clothes for extra insulation. In cities, if you could find an all night store or restaurant nearby to park, a building under construction was a good spot for a roof overhead; I liked at least the third floor, thieves and security folks generally wouldn't go very high. Only good on Fridays and Saturdays, otherwise you'd get woke up early by guys coming to work. Never had anyone hassle me back then, but wouldn't even try it today. 'Course, at my age, I'd be too stiff to walk in the morning. Only place I traveled where I never considered sleeping outside was Florida, other than the pan handle. Nasty critters & 47 trillion bugs in that place, and I think most of em bite. Did sleep on the ground once in a place way worse than Florida, but didn't have any choice there, the helicopter got sick and nobody bothered to come get us. Wandering a little off track there, somebody else's turn now.
+1... still enjoy camping, but nowadays I can afford to stay legal.
Not doing it to save money folks.....Just doin it for the fact of getting away from the people, be it way back in the sticks or like some have said just tucked away out of site. It's for that not supposed to be here factor i guess.
The only problem I had with this was when I picked a place the happened to be the high school drinking spot. About 11:00 pm 3-4 cars pull up and about a dozen kids pill out and start the music and drinking. Then they see the bikes and wander over. Rob and I pull on our clothes and come out. We didn't know what to expect. They apologize for waking us up and leave.
My wife and I did that a few times here in Alaska. Never worried about land owners but we did discuss "TENT RULES" they are located below!
1. Take a leak prior to going to sleep.
2. Never leave the tent while the other is sleeping.
3. When waking up, never sit straight up.
4. If I say SHEE-YATT put your fingers in your ears.
5. If you happen to take up sleep walking don't be grunting>
6. Never scream Raaaaahh
The shotgun is always loaded for bears and Crackheads

My buddy and I camped on the shores of the Mississippi for $8, water and electricity this weekend. In Sabula Iowa.
