71 shovel clutch push rod
I installed new pro clutch on 71 kick only fx, now trying to adjust clutch but seems like push rod is in too deep ? I removed rod when I pulled old clutch hub seemed like it pulled right out does this rod have a clip in kicker cover and do I need to remove kicker cover to get rod back in correctly? So basically the clutch lever down by tranny keeps popping out so can’t adjust cable!!!

You just need to get the exhaust pipe out of the way. Take pressure off the clutch plates. Need slack in the clutch arm. Remove arm from the top of the shaft. Book doesn't mention it but it is easier to remove and install the cover with the kicker spring unwound.
Drain the tranny, take off nuts and washers. May have to use a rubber mallet to tap on the cover to free it from the gasket.
When you get the cover off you will see how the kicker shaft engages with the clutch pushrod and throwout bearing (therz a notch in it). Install throwout bearing and pushrod.
Kicker gear has to be in the 5 o'clock position in order to get the cover on. This will also ensure your kicker arm is at 12 when you rewind and reinstall kicker spring. You can usually get it into the right position as you install the cover by manipulating the starter crank slightly.
