What purpose does the spring that goes in the lifter body serve? I have found them both ways in bikes ive had, but never have asked what they're for. My currenr bike has the springs. How about pushrods...current adjustable pushrods dont have oil holes in the ends of the rods. I know some people like the solids, some dont. I dont mind them, and it's what I'll use in this bike, but just curious about those two things.
IDK...On Solids?? Unless it helps keep the pushrods on the seat when loosened..??? I can't say that I want them.I have never worried about hole in Pushrod either... on a Shovel... BTW all Hydro Units have a spring that I know of.
Note here that I actually Prefer Hydro's on a RoadBike..Kinder, Gentler... IMO
But... I have a Dedicated Race bike, for those occasions.

I would think that the purpose of the spring is to help suspend the plunger in the lifter body when on the base circle of the cam to aide in refilling the lifter with oil.. As well as keeping the cup up on the pushrod.. quieter.....

We are still talking solids right????
Again... None of my solid liftes has, nor needs any Springs... In general, as John says, and I certainly agree... "Springs was like a lot of stuff to make a guy who has no idea think something to the spring is a better idea"... or sumpin like that

I could be wrong but I do believe The OP asked about springs IN the lifter body.. A solid lifter is just that, Solid... No spring IN the lifter body so he must have questioned the purpose of a spring in a Hydro..

a type of solid lifter conversion came along some years back - and they in fact do have a spring under the solid top section that installs into the hydraulic lifter body so its lifter body a spring and the solid insert - reason I said what I said about ---- ( smoking mirrors )
