Default Still having primary problems

I am still having problems with my primary, I reassembled every thing and all is going well I thought. I have put a different inner primary case because the heel toe shifter housing was in better condition than original ,it came off same model bike. Replaced compensator with used OEM part, new primary chain. New clutch housing ,new output drive sprocket, and new chain adjustment shoe. I put the clutch plates back in and adjusted clutch to where I though it should be. Made the primary shoe adjustment and was turning the chain to check for tight spots and I heard a clacking noise. The chain is hitting the outside bracket of the primary chain adjuster. I fooled with it until I ran out of ideas. So I tore everything apart again and pulled the spacer behind the engine shaft extension an partly reassembled big improvement clacks once in a while but I don’t think it is right. I need help. Pics to follow.

You can see the chain on the edge of the shoe

Pulled out 60 thousandths spacer out and put things bac on

Removing spacer moved chain over , I thought I measured right and the spacer belongs in there. I still think the chain should be over farther yet.

The way the chin ride on the clutch basket without spacer.

The what the chain rides on compensator without spacer I really don’t know what I am to do

I would rather move the adjuster, than run the chain crooked... follow the [H-D] service manual for Chain Alignment, then do what must be done..

Is it just me or does that Primary Chain adjuster look modified quite a bit? It looks to be already flipped or installed wrong or what and the through bolt isn't where it should be? Something doesn't look quite right???

Think he is okay on that. The shoe appears to be an aftermarket part but should work fine

Unlike modern Harleys, least after 2003 (haa.). Harley had realized that making parts closer saved the money on the assembly line. Your model probably has 10 part number listings for different spacers. (It's still in my 04 Service manual but they were no longer available). Mine got off and investigation reviled the spline was stripped on alternator rotor and it had a big wear groove on back side. A 1/32 will start nipping chain in sprocket.

panz your pic is not what he is showing on the pic in post #1. Your pic is of an FX with mid controls and quite a few balance holes in the rotor. I would like the same view of his.

From looking at the OPs homepage I believe he has an FLT model. And again, I still believe the issue is not with the chain adjustster but as stated by others, an alignment issue.

And that first pic, if it is an FLT model looks to be a pic of his chain tensioner shoe #39990-65. It is different than those used on from FLH and FX models.

If he has a service manual for 84-90 FLT/FXR models, he can go to 6-3 where it talks about Sprocket Alignment.

I think I have found the problem, It is the new clutch hub, I put the old hub back on and did some measurements and and found that the diameter of the out put shaft hole is about .035 Smaller confirmed by the Indy that I use. It will not go on the shaft as far as the old one and makes the chain drag on the out side bracket of the chain adjuster. Putting the old one back in allowed the chain to clear. I will have a new one tomorrow and see what happens later this week when I have time to fool with it.

Old hub measurement from inner primary to clutch hub

Measurement of the new ( bad) clutch hub
