Sir Graham, CHP did a study a while back and I cannot find it now BUT what it said was having a long flap on the front reduced flats on the rear. They also had a mid frame flap they mentioned.
I actually have a half done hillbilly engineered mid frame flap I made for my bike but just have not finished it.
Hi Ted, Thanks for that, I'm glad to learn that I didn't dream that mid-frame one. If you come across anything more about it I'm all ears - er, eyes! For many years I've had a short flap hanging from the front of my rear fender, to the rear of the swingarm pivot, to reduce splash forward, but it isn't adequate to support a much longer flap. I'll be reworking the rear end shortly, so may take a fresh look at how to mount something behind the trans.
With a little trimming, I think this will do the job....
I got a set of these in ... It looks like it will hang down too far if Sam and the Back Off are left on. I'm going to try it though. I'll post when I get it done. Need to trace the HD flap to use as a template first.
I'm cheap [economical in use or expenditure; prudently saving or sparing; not wasteful] so I made a front mudflap using stuff I had in my shop. I removed the fender skirt and then cut a chunk out of an old truck tire inner tube. I cut it to the approximate size of a mudflap and then used RTV to glue it to the inside of the fender skirt. The inner tube has about the same contours as the fender so it conformed nicely. Next I used a scissors to trim it so it was symmetrical and reattached the skirt/flap assembly. I put one just like it on my old bike and it lasted for over 5 years.

Damn, I forgot I posted that. It was a lame attempt at humor...
I used to post that pic on the Corvette forum whenever someone would ask about mud flaps. It really used to irritate some of the holier-than-thou corvette people....
Now you have me curious as to if it would work and how it would look......
