Default Ear protection

Hello, I am wondering what you all wear for ear plugs or protection while on the road. I wear regular ear plugs with a 33nr rating but seems to not do quite enough. Any thoughts out there?

I bought a big box of 3M brand 33's at Grainger a couple of years ago. I think a lot has to do with how often you swap them out. I tend to push them for a week or more at a time. You can really tell the difference when you get fresh ones.

I know what you mean about then seeming "not enough". After you get used to them, it's as if your brain compensates. I've thought about going to a hearing aid place and getting some custom made, but haven't ever gotten around to it.

I wear an ear plug made for shooting. It's rubber, with 3 big to small "heads" on it. It's so good, if my wife is standing near me, talking to me, I can hear her. Granted, I still hear some wind noise but not nearly as much.

I wear the surefire earpro ep4's. They're only rated to 24db with the cap inserted, but I run with the cap out for skeet shooting and only use them for riding occasionally. If it's windy out, they make the ride a bit more enjoyable with a half shell on. They have some others rated up to 30db and the design is very comfortable.

I've tried the foam ones, and surefire. The problem I have will them all is they seem to come out while I'm riding....maybe its my ears. Over the years my tinnitus has become more noticeable, so I finally gave up and had a pair of custom musician plugs with 25Db attenuators....we'll see.

i use the mushroom type of ear plugs that have a plastic cord about a foot long attaching the two plugs together. when you pull them out they just hang around your neck.

Since I started riding behind a windshield, I use nothing with my half helmet. If years of fronting a rock band (lead guitar and vocals-standing in front of the cymbals) hasn't already ruined my hearing, I figure nothing will.

Fact is, earplugs make me feel too "cut off" from the world around me.

I used the foam plugs pictured below and find they're enough.

I'm also wondering what type of helmet you wear and whether it fits properly (ie. not too loose).

I have a couple of choices that I use. Either the soft foam kind that will mold to the inner ear or I also have a pair of custom molded ear plugs that I used at the mill.
