It's worth the trip down, I promise. Honestly one of the best areas. Lots of good rides close by and of course the museum which is pretty awesome if you've never been. Some great old bikes there.
But do try and go during the week, the crowds will be much smaller.

Personally I think The Dragon is over-rated (Tail of the Dragon is a little shop at Deals Gap), but if you are going to do it, definitely do it early in the morning on a weekday. Otherwise you will not enjoy it nearly as much.
I much prefer Moonshine Run and Cherahola Skyway for nice rides.
