No to gear drive due to the close tolerances needed to run them. It's gear against gear and when the crank spins out of wack they will mash against each other and cause loud whining noise or worse damage. Yes you can get a smaller gear to compensate for this, but you have to be sure you measure right and I believe you have to get the regular gear kit then on top of that buy the smaller gear.......all that risk on a stock crank that can get worse over time (not worth in IMHO).
If the crank is not addressed then chain is the safe route to go.
Thanks! Yes, I was reading about it. Bottom end is out of the budget right now. Btw, is there an easy way to measure crank runout (e.g. cheap tools/rent tools)?

Odds are 1000 to 1 the crank runs within gear spec. I would recommend .001 or less for a gear mesh.
The new roller chains are fine, . overkill.
It was the older chains that wore bad.
But I'm about to install an S&S cam plate with chain drive 585s, and was thinking about these tensioners. I spoke to Zippers about using them with the S&S plate, and they (of course) highly recommended doing so...
I feel like the dual piston concept is good, and my impression is that Zippers makes high quality stuff, but if anyone has any other two-cents right now, I'm all ears...
Tarik, are you married to the chain drive? With a '00, you could probably use gear drives. No idea the cost of the zippers setup, but it would have to be fairly close to getting into gear drive territory.

Yeah... I've gone back and forth on that. I guess maybe the timken engines are less prone to crank runout? I dunno...
It wasn't really a cost decision, I just read a whole bunch and decided (knowing me) that I would constantly worry about crank runout. I can picture myself fearing that everything was on the verge of self-destructing every time I thought I heard a new noise! I realize it's illogical! I just thought it was one less variable to cause anxiety in the back of my head!
