My FXDX has had a pretty good sized dent in the tank since way before I owned it. At some point the right turn signal whacked the tank hard, and there was a very small dent in the corresponding location on the left side (I've since relocated the signals, so it will never happen again).
I've spoken with a couple of PDR guys, but none of them wanted to work on it... The consensus was that the size and location would make it almost impossible to avoid breaking the paint significantly. At some point last year I found an NOS FXDX tank that had never been mounted on a bike, and had sat in a parts department forever... It still had factory shrinkwrap on it. Since my tank is currently off anyway, I decided it's time to make the swap... I didn't want to pull the 10+ year old plastic off for fear of damaging the paint, so I brought it to a very high-end detailer who is a vendor at work for expensive cars. He unwrapped it, cleaned it, polished it, buffed it, and put two ceramic coats on to provide some chip/scratch protection. I just got it back... These pictures don't really do it justice, but it's incredible how good it looks! I've spend big money on custom paint that didn't look as good as this... Considering it's old, non-metallic factory paint, it's amazing how deep the finish looks, and there is no sign of a swirl mark or anything...
I'm almost scared to put it on my bike! I'm very curious about the ceramic coating... It feels incredibly smooth and is supposed to be extremely strong... We'll see how it holds up in real life.
Looks great and good find. I might have a shot at getting some take off vivid black tins. They were pulled off the guys bike at sale and have been in his garage ever since, approximately 6 years ago. I think I would take them to a reputable auto detailer like you did if I get them. Know the name of the ceramic coating product? It's just one of those paint protectants that only lasts two years or so?
Amazing how nice vivd black is when its properly cared for. Those look beautiful.
The FXDX tank logos are probably my favorite. Simple, clean, and well balanced on the tank.
I really can't believe how well the tank shows after being cleaned up well... Those logos are my favorite as well, which is why I was psyched to find this NOS tank. Now I can have the dent fixed on my original tank without having to worry about the paint, and paint it some crazy bright metalflake as an alternate!
I was able to install the new-old tank this weekend. It looks great on the bike! I also swapped the center console to a cleaner piece I found on eBay. I was originally going to repaint it, but the wrinkle was in pretty good shape as was the trim. I just cleaned it all really well and it looks noticeable better than my original did.
Btw, that line through the center of the tank is not in the paint... It's a power line up above!
You are of course too kind! As long as the compliments are flying around, I'll say again how much I like your Sportster, and Lazarus is coming along nicely!
