The Fat Bob at introduction was the highest priced Dyna of them all, the styling and the price point clipped a lot of the sales, plus a lot of folks bought the street bob viewing it as a blank canvas for their own creation, which makes sense because so much of the stock motorcycle ends up as a pile in the corner of the garage.
My opinion of the Fat Bobs styling is that it has a unique muscle bike look. It shows some Euro influence from the street-fighter crowd of the early 1990's (dual headlamps, Triumph did that also), and the big tire treatment from Exile Cycles was also a big influence, but I doubt the motor company will admit that.
I think the Fat Bob has a large cult following, it looks like some owners are more than happy enough to spend big bucks on them.
But after you peel all the sheet metal off, there's still a Dyna Glide under there.

I had a street bob and change lots of things, now I have a Fat Bob I don't feel as much needs changing.

For me it was the larger tank and dual from disk brakes that made it appealing

I originally thought I wanted another bike like my street bob, apes, air ride etc.
Instead i'm leaning towards what I would call a euro/streetfighter-ish style.

Like this:

But there are plenty of ways to go with a fatty

Yeah, I wondered why "letters and numbers guy" even started this thread?
He must not be looking or what's it all handed to him on a silver platter.
Why build a fatty? It's already got it.
Unless like so many, putting different bars on makes it a build.

Personally, I think it's a great bike. I just wish I saw more custom builds out on the street.

Muddyape did a nice FL front end on his. Search up Hooligan 4.0 for a glimpse. Most who want to really alter the look start with something more of a traditional canvas like a Street Bob or Super Glide. Here's a more recent pic of my Fatty...

Hate the fender, but your bike is so "ugly" i love it!

I my self have modded 2 a 2012 that I modded to look like a heritage look with riveted bags that I dubbed my heritage fat (sadly it jumped well but had problems landing) and a 2013 that I have morphed into a road king look (my fat king) with hard bags, custom paint and wider tires, imo great bikes and in Canada not any more expensive then most dynas.

Personally I'm glad there aren't as many Fat Bobs out there. I like to be different. That's part of why the Fat Bob originally appealed to me. Also, before my HD days I was a sport bike rider and as other have already said the FXDF is set up with more sport bike-like attributes. I'm on my second Fat Bob now and I'm not sure what else I'd get as a replacement.
