So I dropped the heads and cylinders off at the machinist and the rear head didn't match the front. So now that I found a matching rear head and got that to him he is now charging me an extra $100 for taking the time to communicate issues and direction with me. He has cleaned up the heads, given them a valve job, drilled for compression releases, and bore the cylinders. He said he had the pistons I wanted to use on hand but he was charging $100 more than anyone else so I told him I would get them elsewhere. Now wants me to bring in the CP forged CNCed pistons to make sure they fit the cylinder with clearance since he sized them for his CP forged CNCed pistons and then get me to a calculated compression by honing his pistons and using them. I feel like he's just tacking stuff onto the work now.

I think he figured out that he's dealing with someone that really doesn't know what they are doing.. If he's going to stand behind his work he wants to make sure that all the parts are correct.. Sounds like a smart guy..

Interesting, so you think that a cylinder does have to bore checked against the individual pistons that will be used and that tolerances in tapering and diameter are not enough?

Engine building 101, all clearances need to be measured and checked to make sure they are within allowable tolerances.

Nope You missed what I was discussing... First off you don't need the pistons to bore the cylinder without taper.. Size is important tho..

You are saying here that the machinist wants to see youd pistons.. Agree with him 100%.. He has to stand behind his work and to get the tolerance right he wants to verify that the pistons you are getting are correct..

I think I do understand what you are saying and was only stating that boring comes with measurements and tolerances that have nothing to do with the actual piston used. You are saying after that tolerances for the pistons used need to be checked for clearances and the such. Here I have a hard time imagining that the CNC CP pistons with the same specs and part number in my hand are going to be out of their spec'd measurements to not fit a cylinder that fits the same piston he has as long as his are not out of spec. I understand that may not be reality and the pistons should be checked to see that they fit but if they don't I have a complaint for the piston maker and not the machinist. My concern is his communication has been pushing using his pistons no matter the situation with the ones I already have.

If you are a motorcycle manufacturer, you can control specifications to the point where the cylinders don't need to be fit to the pistons. All the motorcycle manufacturers do this as it saves time. Their source is controled and the specs are controlled by documents that are agreed upon.. After market all that goes out the window and the control is transferred to person fitting the parts. If the tolerances are off, the piston may seize or simply rattle. In both cases are you going to accept that the piston is at fault and tell the manufacturer of the piston that they are at fault.
These guy only makes money is they are cutting metal (probably some on parts sales but they don't do distributor pricing).. They don't have any problem machining to tolerance if you provide a drawing that can be agreed upon or you supply the pistons up front and let them follow the instructions supplied with the kit. It's called quality..
If you wanted to have cylinders bored, I'm sure the guy has no problem boring to supplied pistons. That is inventory he doesn't have to deal with. The important thing is that you supply them up front.

Absolutely; in torque plates with accurate gauges.
