I have a Harley/HJC modular that is about seven years old and I am going to replace it this winter. I bought a Shoei Neotec about five years ago that I wear when riding my BMW and it has been a big improvement over the Harley/HJC. I am considering the Shoei GT Air as it is about the same as the Neotec and that helmet has fit well. I like the drop down eye shade and the ventilation is very good.
Not that this should change your decision, but I went to the NY Motorcycle Show this past weekend and the Shoei booth had a "transitions" shield that worked remarkably well. However, this shield was NOT available for any model helmet that already had a drop-down sun visor. Perhaps something to consider.
Hi George,
Schuberth actually stopped making a quiet helmet claim in their marketing in their most recent generation of helmets. They used to associate a decibel level created for each helmet model, but they no longer list that in their product details. There are so many variables when riding that those who have test rode Schuberth helmets in the office have not reported they are exceptionally quiet compared to other brands.
I usually recommend wearing foam ear plugs to anyone purchasing a helmet from us, whether it is an $800 Schuberth helmet or a $100 Speed and Strength helmet.
A tall wind screen also helps to make pretty much any helmet a little quieter.
Helmets with a thick neck roll and a chin curtain/skirt tend to favor a bit quieter than others that are missing those features. Here are a few helmets to consider around $250.
I have heard mixed reviews of helmet wind blockers like the Windjammer. But the concept is similar to a thick neck roll and a chin skirt. This helps to seal off the bottom of the helmet.

Thanks for the information. I am planning to go to the show in Chicago in February, so I will have an opportunity to see the transition shields then.
I just bought a three year old Shoei quest off CL that was an extra helmet for a guy whose wife decided she was done riding for $120.00. Bought new cheek pads, breath guard and a pinlock visor system to reduce fogging in cold temp riding. I've never owned or wore a FF in the 40 years of riding but so far I really like this. I bought it to add to my cold weather gear but I may see how it works when the weather does warm up.
A bad helmet will give you a headache, a good one feels like a nice baseball cap. $300 is about right for a good one, above that you're paying for some race stuff.
$300 will buy you an amusing piece of plastic.
Sorry, I value my head a hell of a lot more than that. I've seen first hand what happens when a human head comes in contact with pavement and it's a lesson I won't soon forget.
I've tried many but my favorties are the Shoei X14 and the AGV Pista GP Carbon.
