Planning a 6 week ride from upstate NY to GNP
I like the northern scenery and my wife likes the southwestern but my suggestion would be to stick to a general are and cover as much of that as possible instead of running up a bunch of miles on your odometer.
I'll probably not get a lot of support on this suggestion, but if I was taking "your" trip, I'd find a "base station", trailer the bikes out and then tour from there.
We (four of us) did such a trip in '10 and parked our rig in Billings, MT and did the GNP and Yellowstone thing, including the Bear Tooth Pass before returning to Billings about two weeks later.
In '07, I trailered the bikes to Great Falls, MT (the wife flew in) and we left our rig in Cut Bank and we did the GNP, Banff and Jasper before returning to Cut Bank and then trailering our bikes back to Sturgis for the Rally.
You could take this route and also make the Crater Lake run.
Using a truck and trailer (especially with two drivers) can give you a lot more riding time and it's especially nice having it closer in the event of a serious breakdown or even worse, an accident.
We've done this since the late 80's and until my wife retires, it optimizes her vacation time and she has got to see and ride much more than she would have if we would have had to ride both ways across "fly over" country.
As for the southwest, we've done that area several times and it can be downright awful (as hot as Hades) in the summer months.
We trailered he bikes to Clovis, NM in the fall (early September) of '08 and took a 2,000 (or so) mile "loop" up through Albuquerque, NM to the Utah Canyon Lands, back through Four Corners and down to the Carlsbad Caverns and then back to Clovis.
It got a little cool in the higher elevations and we brushed frost of our seats on a couple of mornings, but no snow and not a drop of rain!.
The only issues we experienced during this trip was the Balloon Festival in Albuquerque (motel rooms are expensive so avoid if at all possible) and an Indian Pow Wow in Shiprock (near Four Corners). Traffic was a nightmare!
Whichever way you go, take your time and if you don't see everything this time, there's always another trip.
The time you spend riding from Spokane to Crater lake and back, might best be used to tour Colorado in my opinion.
Bear tooth pass and Chief Joseph pass are worth the slow traffic in Yellowstone.
I always stay in West Yellowstone, and then do the North loop one day, and the South loop another.
If you go out of Yellostone via Bearthoth, then stop in Red Lodge and work your way to GNP from there.
If you go to Banff, then keep on going to Jasper. The town of Banff is pretty much a sh*t hole, and Jasper is much much nicer, and you will drive the Banff/Jasper sky-way which is a marvelous road. Just remember that Jasper and Banff are very spendy in the summer for motels.
As to GNP, I would suggest getting a motel in Kalispel, and riding in from the west end and up and over to St Marys, then double back. This will be an enter day, and you will get the view from both sides. I live about 2 hours north of Kalispel and do my very best to get into GNP at least once a year.
if you head to Couer D'Alene from Banff, you will drive right by my house. Let me know, if I am in town, I will buy you a coffee.
No matter what you do, it will be a hell of summer. Enjoy.

Also, I see you are going over Lolo. That is a great ride, but I suggest you head towards Lewiston, and then south over Rattle Snake pass, onto Enterprise, and then through Hells Canyon. It is a significantly nicer ride than Lolo. the Difference is that Lolo is a nice ride, but Rattlesnake pass and Hells Canyon are bucket list roads.
Just south of Enterprise is Joseph, which you need to go through to get to Hells Canyon. Chief Joseph is buried there. If you go to his grave site, take a gift and leave it. You will see what I mean....
Breakfast at the Cheyenne Cafe in Joseph. Take an appetite and ask for 1/2 the potatoes, unless you are really, really hungry. I stop there every time, and if you tell them Rocky sent you, I get to eat for free.....LOL...
3400 miles, no rain, unbelievable roads and country.
We left Saratoga NY 7/22, went through Buffalo to Sarnia and then followed MXZ600 advice for MI. Went up east side of Lake MI, up to south side of Lake Superior, over to Ashland, then booked to Mobridge and down to Spearfish for a few days. Then to Sheridan, Cody and Chief Joseph and Beartooth to Red Lodge. Then back over Beartooth to Yellowstone and up to Big Timber.
Today we had an awesome trip through MT to Cut Bank (couldn't find a closer room to GNP). Lewis &Clark Nat. Park was killer. Every day has been better than the last. Looking forward to tomorrow!
I'll try pictures but don't stop too often to take them, every mile is amazing (and am technology challenged to post photos but will try). Beautiful night here in Cut Bank.
Thanks for the advice👍
When we left Cody it was 90
Chief Joseph was awesome
Every mile up Beartooth got better, we had lightning around us, some snow flurries when we stopped, back to 80 by Red Lodge.
Even got a shot of a nice little buck!
We're now staying in Polson for 3 days and then Libby for 3 more so we have lots of time to explore in all directions.
Then heading solo to Hells Canyon via Lolo Pass, south to Cambridge ID, then Copperfield, OR and back up to Enterprise (anyone know if south to north on Hells Canyon is as good as north to south?) Is this a good way to go?
Then I head back up North to meet back up with my buddy in Creston BC on 8/15. Then to Revelstoke, Jasper and Banff for a 3 day circle.
Then we head south to Moab and Colorado for 5 days.
Appreciate all the tips here, has made the trip great so far.

I am in Jasper and just did Creston to Revelstoke yesterday and Revy to Kamloops to Jasper today. The view of Mt Robson when you come around the corner slaps you right in the face and takes your breath away. Kind of like staggering an Oxen if it got wacked in the head with a Pole Axe.
Smoke in some places bad. Best make sure the second boat is running. There are some road closures just north of the landing on the East side.
