Hello, I need a little help diagnosing a problem with a 06 Heritage Softail.
Bike was running fine with no issues then just started backfiring out of intake and will not idle unless you give it throttle. I pulled the plugs and they were damp. I also checked for any leaks around the intake or any missing vacuum caps. I put fresh gas in it also.
Bike is a 06 Heritage (28,000 miles) with Vance and Hines Long Shots, stage 1 intake and a Dobeck tuner. I unplugged the tuner and the problem was still there.
Put run switch to on. Hold in the odometer reset button and then turn on the ignition switch that is on the tank.
Speedo needle will sweep up to 120 and back again.
Then you should see PSST where your mileage is. Release the odometer reset button and then press it again to go through each letter. You may have to hold the reset button at each letter until a code comes up or it says "noNE" If there is an issue with you MAP sensor or other sensor like your Crank position sensor it will tell you a code and then the corresponding PN.
If you google HD trouble codes it will show you the entire procedure in more detail and what the codes mean.
Thanks, I should have added that I did pull the codes and each area showed NONE. When backfiring through the intake you can actually see light (I'm guessing spark or fire). You can rev the bike but it runs really rough and continues to backfire through the intake.
its way easier to check compression first before pulling guts of tank..
may want to remove air cleaner , start eng and hold a rag or your hand over intake opening covering about 3/4's or so of the inlet(think choke). if it idles better or picks up rpm its running lean and most likely have the fuel line issue.
Plugs are getting spark. I pulled the inerds of the tank out and the fuel filter was pretty dirty. I blew air through the hoses but could not see or hear any leaks. I'm kinda stumped now on what next. I'll get a new fuel filter. Should I go ahead and replace the hoses too? Any other suggestions?,
