Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I have a custom hardtail bobber with the 80ci evo, was out riding one morning and a few miles out had heard an odd noise coming from my motor then disappeared. Next day same thing but was aggressively worse, rode it home and then did a little bit of investigating. Noise was coming from the cam side cover, proceeded to open it up and just disaster. Metal pieces everywhere, etc.
the tappet had some how turned sideways and ruined the guide block and worn down the came on that lope.
How could something like this have happened? See picture below.
Already going to replace the cam with the Andrews ev27, and get a new guide block along with inner bearing and gaskets. What tappets should I use for replacement? Just stock HD do fine (yes I'm going to replace all 4)
I had the lifter wheel bearings, come apart in my '93 Ultra. Motor had just under 50k on it. Was riding going about 25 mph when it just let loose. What a racket it made. Bearing parts were munched up everywhere. At that point I did a factory reman motor. The new motor supposedly had better upgraded lifters in it, and I put 38 k on that one without any issues. You'd think by that point in time Harley would have parts like lifters figured out and bullet proof.,,
Evos are set up differently than the Twin Cams you and I are used to working on. The lifter bore is part of the removable cap, as opposed to machined in the block. I think.
Yea a billet block would be nice but more than my pocket can afford right now. I've got everything pretty much ordered with the ev27. Am I going to need some shims for this? I'm still debating what tappets to get, just go with the stock HD?
