Default 98 Road King EFI no spark issues

98 Road King with EFI, V&H large oval slip-ons (no baffles), TFI fuel controller. Only other thing done to bike is apes.

Riding down the road, bike shut down. Pulled over, it fired right back up & gave me no other issues. Few days later, same thing, but wouldn't start again. Got it home & charged battery, it fired right up. Sat idling for about 2-3 minutes & shut down again. Checked with spark tester & no fire to either cylinder. Disconnected TFI controller & checked again. Fired right up & idled fine for about 5 minutes again before shutting down. Again, no fire. Charged battery again (tried long enough to run it down) & weak fire to front, no fire to back.

While letting it sit running, I found blown head gasket on rear cylinder, so I ordered gasket set & Andrews EV-27 (I mean, why not? Right?) I realized these won't change this spark issue, but needed done anyhow.

So I've got it all back together, & naturally still have the spark issues. Only now, she's only running about a minute before shutting down & TFI is still unplugged. Ground from battery to frame is good, I'm looking for where to go next. I know there's a way to read the engine codes, but I can't find the post talking about it.

ANY help yall can provide will be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks, Thumper

Default Found this

So when looking for anything that just doesn't look right, I found this... It looks like it is getting hot & melting, has what appears to be dielectric grease on it, but ????

Yep. cam position sensor crapped out. Fairly common on OEM one. Most of the OEM sensors had tan plastic covering the electronics. Yours is black. New part number is 32448-95B. They are not cheap...180+. Should get you back in black.

Wow. Stealership wants $202 for new one. I've had several guys telling me on FB pages that the stock sensor is "ok" but aftermarket is actually better & cheaper. Any suggestions on which models to look at?

Standard motor products MC-spa-3, on Amazon for 40$. Only difference is it doesn't have the tip over shut down the factory version has. Just don't drop your bike and you will be good.

Has anyone actually used the non-EFI sensor on an EFI bike? I haven't heard any success stories.

I think it is the same part, maybe? For evo use the fixed holes, for carb use slots for timing adjustment.

Perhaps someone that knows more about these can shed some light.

That is the same thing that I have heard, but I have not heard nor read about someone getting the carbed version actually working in a bike with EFI.
