My 98 Softail takes forever to warm up. I put a Mikuni on it and it takes even longer. I pull out the enrichener and only hit the throttle after it has fired. Man, it is hard to sit there 5 minutes while it warms up. I baby it down the street with the **** out before pushing it back in. Patience.

Install either a Dynatek 2000P or I and your starting will improve dramatically.

I've got a S & S HI-4N. It runs great when it is warmed up but I still wonder about the warm up time. It could be the Mikuni needs a good tune-up which I am not good at.

The stock choke cable does have a spring to help it “self close.” However, there is a friction adjustment that let’s the choke stay in the “activated position” without having to repull or hold the choke **** out.

What I did with my 1995 FXD-
Full choke on cold start.
Push in choke to acquire 1350-1400 rpm for a minute.
Push in choke to 1100 rpm for 1 minute.
Push choke all the way in and ride off gently for about 10 minutes.
This worked for 21 years ( until I sold it & bought an FXDL.)
I had “stage 2” (Full pipe/carb jet/cam/A-C/pushrods/lifters/rockers)
Ran great and didn’t start using oil until about 90,000 miles. Seemed like the oil use “leveled off” at 130,000 miles.
Still wish I had that bike....

Actually... My OEM CV carb runs fine when it's cold (it's been tuned). And EFI is great, but it does nothing to resolve the issue of different parts of the engine expanding at different rates. Which is why it's always better (IMHO) to allow a cold engine to warm up a bit before flogging it like a rented mule.

I agree 100%. While my MM EFI warms up the engine effortlessly, I allow the different metals to get reacquainted for several minutes every ride. Have to baby those base gaskets.

On my electra, S&S 96" Superstock with Dyna 2000, Supertrapp 2-1 and S&S Super E:

- Twist throttle 2 - 3 times
- Hit button
- Won't start? Pull enrichener fully open and hit button.

Enrichener off straight away and ride off.

If it wants to stall just blip the throttle a couple of times inbetween shifting.

Idling for minutes? Never done that.
