Something went REAL wrong if you truly have a damaged cage on one of those bearings.
I'm having a hard time imagining what could have been done to damage a cage on one of those bearings. Least in normal day in and day out servicing of tapered bearing.
Id sure like to know what they tell you

They replaced both sets of bearings and it handles great now. It was a little hard to ken just where they put the blame, whether on the bearings themselves, which they said were "flattened", or on the cages themselves. I think it was the bearings themselves that were damaged by being over-tightened, maybe not necessarily the cages. I can't picture it.

Yep, dealers can be a brotherhood and won't throw another under the bus. I'll go with they were over tightened and the dealer found the problem, replaced the bearings in theory of being damaged and safe insurance from a repeat failure.
Ride on, you have many Evo warriors cheering you on.
