Back to good news. Turns out all I did was loosen one of the wires coming out of the key switch. Got that sorted, and took her for a spin.

It was 11:00 at night and cold as hell, so I only went for a short ride, but she seems to be running like a champ.

Coolest thing is reaching down and shutting off the ignition and the bike just keeps running! To actually kill the motor there is a little copper strap on the side of the magneto that you ground to the side of the housing.

The crossover is going away, and that's a good thing. It's in the way.

Timing this thing isn't that hard, but it's something of a pain doing it solo. I scribed a mark on the rotor so I can find the timing position more easily in the future. It will be interesting to see how often this needs adjusting. I haven't had a points-type ignition on a vehicle since my 1970 Bug, and I probably only touched it once in 30k miles.

Interesting read, had not thought about a magneto, sorting a 74 XLCH kicker, right side shift. Magneto just another level of cool.
Like your project, and plans sound like a would be a hell of a ride.

^^^^Sweet bike! The XLCH is one of my all time favorites. I'll bet it sounds great with those pipes.

Minor bit of progress today...FINALLY got the frame question sorted.

Spent the last couple of weeks going back and forth, trying to decide if I stick with the Paughco I had originally intended to use, or get something custom made. After a lot of pondering and too much time spent drawing up ideas, I ended up back where I started: Going with the Paughco.

So that should be here in a couple of days. In the mean time, I took the Electra Glide over to my father in law's storage shed so it's out of the way for the project. Got one more chore ahead of me (bigazz window upstairs rotted out. Got the new one in the garage, ready to install) and then it's ***** to the walls time.
