1988 FLHS the "Sport"
People who think Harleys are a good investment are depressed too.
Love my 1990 FLHS, bought new, although it is far from stock now....
It's been a keep it, dump it trip with my 93 FLHS. It was another fellow's pride and joy, but it too sat for several years with just startups now and then because he couldn't ride. But he had always kept it up and to hear him tell it the things was in perfect running shape. It's been one thing after another. Mostly age related, but just all a week or two apart. Get one thing fixed, ride a week, and something else goes wrong. I got with just under 63K miles on it. He swears it's because I took all the freaking fringe off of it and it an perfect before I did that. Right.
When I took it in for the 10K service right after I got it the shifter fork also had to be replaced. Then it was charging issues. After the entire charging system was replaced the new AGM battery dumped a cell. New battery under warranty fixed that, but the timing just really pissed me off. Next was the clutch. New cable at first. Seemed alright, then started acting up. The indy shop and I thought it was the back plate going, but it turned out a few of the rivets on the inner plates had disintegrated. New clutch pack. I also had all the fuel and vacuum lines replaced and an extra fuel filter put inline.
Still needed are fork seals replaced, the cylinder gaskets are weeping and will have to be replaced soon, and there's a crack in the exhaust at the back joint.
On the positive side, the bike has a mid range cam, S&S carb, and long pipes with fishtails I've finally gotten used to. They do sound good. After the carb got sorted out the bike went from a 5 minute warm up with some choke and throttle gymnastics to if the temps overnight didn't go below 70F I can start the bike with no enricher and throttle lock it at around 1100 rpm while I get ready which doesn't take long. Then the bike idles and rolls away fine.
I'm hoping the bugs and immediate issues are done and I can get to the other stuff with limited funds now. I am kinda starting to really enjoy riding the barge. The seat, or my butt, is starting to mold and adjust to fit some.
Time to get ready for work and take the Harley. I generally commute with the bike several days a week when it's not trying to get back into the indy shop. I swear it has a crush on either another bike there or one of the people.
The bike.
