Lou,
We were a bit on the poorer side when I was growing up. My folks had it much better by the time they were retiring.
The foundation was so poor in our little old farm house that my dad would stack small square hay bales 2 rows high all the way around the house in an effort to keep floor drafts down.
The old windows were also drafty so we would cover each window in plastic to help keep the cold out .... and the heat in.
We didn't even know we were poor .....
