Default Washington D.C. to Newark N.J. (Help)

Can someone help me with the best (scenic) route I can take from D.C. all the way up to Newark N.J.? I'm trying to stay away from I-95 completely but on the other hand, I would like to see less traffic lights as well.

“Scenic” isn’t really a word I think of when I think about what’s between DC and Newark...if you aren’t in too much of a hurry you might take US 15 north past Harrisburg...then maybe take US 209 eastward? There are also some nice roads north of Cecil County, MD (exiting 95 at Rising Sun), but it’s fairly leisurely riding in those parts.

Thanks for your reply Hraefn. From DC area I know I want to make a stop at York, PA to tour HD Factory, before head up North to Newark, NJ. Do you think it's better off for me to take I-270 towards Frederick then 15 N then 30 E towards York?

I live about 15 miles from Newark and my daughter lives in DC. It takes me 3 hrs and 5 minutes to make the trip with one pee stop, on 95. That's when you leave at the right time to avoid commuter traffic in the DC area. When heading north on 95, when you get close to Delaware, you can shoot over to Lewe's, and take the ferry to NJ. That puts you by the start of the GS parkway in Cape may. You could go check Cape may out if you got the time. It also depend what time of the year your going on your trip. The parkway is a little better then I -95 as far as being scenic, but the speed limit is 65 and it's all highway. You taken a bike or a car?.,,,

I’ve ridden on 30 many times, going east from US 15...it's an okay ride, but not spectacular...and York and Lancaster both can be slow going on 30. You might consider I 270 to Frederick and then picking up MD 194 to US 30...194 is a nice bit of road.

I say yes --- 270 to 15 to 30. Nothing scenic or fun, east of there, so I think I'd probably head north from York on 83, and pick up the turnpike just to get there as easily as possible. Turnpike will probably be alot easier, less aggravating, faster, and safer than 30. Definitely faster than hitting the lights on 30.

If you use the avoid highways route option on Google Maps you get this route. Did you ever use that option?

I would definitely avoid the Highways as long as I could. But the seven hours riding it will be too much. Well not for me anyway but for my group.
See, we gonna do this during the 115th HD Anniversary event and we will start our road trip from D.C.

I'm originally from New Jersey but moved to California. So I know how it is with the 95 corridor.

Geezr, after 83 (on York), which turnpike do you suggesting?

Also, what do you think about 222 East from York towards Allentown, before merging onto I-78 towards Newark, NJ?
