The sportster came out in 57. When that guy brought one to the Baja everyone laughed and thought he wouldn't even qualify. 4th place is outstanding for a bike model at that time that was 28 years old. Harley also won the Baja 500 in 76 with the mx250. Not bad for a one year only bike from a company not known for performance except only in flat track races

Haters are gonna hate
But you should be giving props, that would be like someone placing in the Baja today with an 87 cherokee

Just think, they even did it without any factory support.

I'm not hating. I'm just saying if they want to compete in the dual sport market, heavy isn't going to sell a lot of bikes.

The DR650 gets crap for being heavy and its onlly 366 lbs.

And the vr1000 only weighed 380. Just because it has a Harley name doesn't mean it has to weigh 800 pounds like their cruisers. They have made light bikes before they can do it again

And the V-Strom 650 is 476 lbs and sells like hot cakes.

Really? Mine feels pretty light and I have the older heavier (but more powerful) one. My friend's 2011 KLR is much heavier. Pretty sure over 400lbs. Both are 650 dual sports. We did a trail ride a month ago and swapped bikes for a bit. He said riding mine brought back when he rode dirt bikes in his youth. The KTM 690 is something like 300-310 which is crazy. His brother has one of those. But I saw most being heavier than the DR650.
