Default Which bike would you get?

I’m looking for a bike that would be dedicated to a Velorex 553 sidecar, mostly for my dog. Maybe grandkids in the future.

I found an experienced sidecar shop shop in Fairfax, IA. He said I should buy a Roadster or a Bonneville 900. The pipes need to go past the axle, to avoid deafening noise for my dog/passsenger.

I found a nice 2004 XL1200R at a HD dealer, for $3,999 only 9kmiles. But it’s
$1,684 to add 2 in 1pipes, tune, air cleaner and labor. So I told them I’d rather get the 2013 Triumph Bonneville T100, because the stock pipes go back to the fender, and they’re around the same price. They said they’d give me a $1,500 discount but then backed down to $800. So the Sporty would be $5,448 OTD with license fees, documents and sales tax. With Supertrapp, 2in 1. They just reach the axle.
The Triumph is $6,694 OTD. It only has 2k miles.

What?

$1700 to install a set of pipes? Those pipes come off in like 10 minutes and that's with a cigarette break between them. That bike is carbed...tune it up and down the block.

$4K is kind of a lot for an '04 anyway...find a nice used 1200 private party and pay at least $1K less than what they're asking before tax and fees.

If those are the two choices I think I'd go with the Triumpth

I'd lean Sporty. More torque which you need for the side car rig, also worth looking at the rake. Longer rake is easier to steer with a side car. The Triumph is a nice bike though and almost 10 years newer....not a slam dunk either way.

It is fuel injected. $1700 is for three hours labor, retail prices on a new air cleaner, Supertrapp exhaust and a Power Vision tuner. They put new tires on too, so it’s a good deal.

Replacing the pipes and AC and you could add a FP3( I think Fuelmoto has them on sale) is pretty easy work. If you have the tools and work skills. You could save that $1700. Do the pipes need to be 2:1? Other versions can go past the axle.

I looked up the torque/HP specs. T100 is 66hp@7500 RPM, 50 ft-lbs torque@5800 rpm.

I don't know the hp for the Sportster but I believe they’re similar, and Harley better at low RPMs. Torque is definitely better at 68@3300RPM.
Triumph is 495 lbs, Sportster 575 lbs, so they probably have similar performance. So I’ll probably look at the Harley first.

The price is for parts and labor, guys. Figure a median $700 for a good exhaust, around $200 for an intake, $400 for a Power Vision, plus the labor for the install and tune. Isn't a bad deal at all. And like Ron750 says, the bike is injected. It pays to do your research.....

As far as the FP3... Get the Powervision for $100 more, and triple the usefulness of the tuner...

They are splitting the cost of the pipes, so basically I’m paying $850 for a Stage One, with Supertrapp 2in1s. That’s a good price installed. Bike looks good online, I’ll check it this weekend.

Ron, regardless of which bike you choose, be sure to post up a pic of the finished sled.
