^^^^^ That's the current situation at metric dealerships all over the country.........TODAY
Plenty of metric bikes in my area. Local Kaw/Hon/Suz/Ya dealers consistently sell more bikes than our HD dealer.
Harley is still hogging sales.

not relevant, it's obfuscation. pretending hd is still dominating, or ever did, the small cruiser/standard market is unrealistic. larger bikes may be a different story.
again talking about the old days is pointless.... worrying about what one other OEM is doing is pointless. there are many oems... meaning many choices.... not just the lame old sportster that has not changed since 2007. i love my sporty and have for years... went through all the phases... but, i'm realistic.
i understand you love the brand but, be real. talking that "i've been doing x and y for x^2 years.." stuff, so what? if you are not dropping dollars on the frontline, you are just talking. did you go out and buy a new sportster recently? i know firehawk6 did with his superlow. hd is getting it's *** handed to it in this smaller displacement arena. them boys out there aren't playing games.
hd is about to respond, despite what the grumpy grey beards think. same way the dyna and the old sloptails just went down, it was beyond belief to everyone... even after it happen. people are still losing their $#!^. had to happen... things are changing
most comparisons have the sporty rolling in dead last or second to last.
"pretty but, out of date." sums it up. ... i honestly don't understand the resistance to an update. wtf is it hurting? you don't need the power? then buy an old bike or.. or.. or, don't twist the throttle so far if you get a newer bike, the bike isn't going to go fast without your permission. lol jeez.

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
It's 2016. I look at that as ....Harley is outselling Honda......Harley is outselling Kawasaki........Harley is outselling Suzuki......Harley is outselling Yamaha.....Harley is outselling Polaris.......Harley is outselling other brands.................by a large margin. You're looking at them all COMBINED. That, imho, is a skewed way to read it.
Doesn't matter. I'm not against Harley developing new bikes. Heck, I wouldn't want to go back to riding my old shovelhead, or my uncle's pan and knucklehead. Fact remains, that at least right now, more people are buying Harley Davidson motorcycles than other brands. You can't lump them all together and say "they" as a group are selling more bikes. As a wise man once said, "you can make numbers sat whatever you want". I go by what I see, and there are at least a dozen new Harleys I see on the road compared to one metric bike. IF, as you say, more people are buying small metric bikes, they must be shoving them under their beds, because they certainly aren't out on the roads. Not around here anyway, and I live in the heart of Ohio Bike Week.
I'd wager that almost every Harley owner started on a Japanese motorcycle. There are guys that used to ride crotch rockets, inline fours, dirt bikes, etc., who now ride Harleys. Doesn't make Harleys better, just more desirable. Japanese bikes are great for getting young people into motorcycling. I'm glad they're around. Most young motorcycle buyers can't afford a $15,000+ motorcycle. Let them buy metric bikes, learn to love motorcycling, and then when they can afford to, and their riding style and needs change, they might be a Harley customer. I do agree Harley needs to build a motorcycle that the average 20 year can afford.
Motorcycling as a sport is declining. Young people today are too into "electronic gadgets", and would rather sit in front of a laptop all day. Sad.
Anyway, that's my .02. I'm out.
