I had the same problem with the starter not stopping. Spun while i was riding and drained my battery. When i came to a stop the engine died and there wasn't enough juice to start again. Turned out to be the relay kept sticking in the 'closed' position.

Yes, I do have that spring in. I took everything apart yesterday. Later on this morning I'll re-assemble and give it another shot. Hopefully my next post will be a positive one.
thanks,

art

Just to show how far I come.

Wired short stud to starter, long stud to +batt and wire from terminal on solenoid to pin 30 on starter relay

^^ Guess I don't have a Clue why you would have Run-on... Keep us posted to add to the Possibilities, for the Next occasion...

Note.. It occurs to me that alligator clips for "power" may Not have given 100% transfer of Juice..
I have invariably "welded" the washer on the Solenoid shut, if a low battery situation was encountered.. and I mean always!!!
Really Grabbing at straws Now....

ANYTHING that makes the solenoid stay in the engaged position will make the starter run on...the return spring in the solenoid may be weak...the shifter lever may be bent or worn...the thrust washer may be missing...sometimes you need 2 thrust washers to make it return.

Maybe this could be my problem. After I put the long roll pin in the correct position the solenoid operated correctly but wouldn't release, causing the run on of the starter. They very first time I tested the starter operation it seemed to me that something was bogging it down. I removed the primary cover and noticed that the brass washer appeared to be binding against the cover.

Instead of the brass washer I used SHIMS that came to about half the thickness of the brass washer. My next step will be to replace the shims with the brass washer and test again. Results to follow, thanks.

That thrust washer is worn out...it will allow the shifter lever to go "over center"and bind up the mechanism so it will not return...if the shifter lever has not been replaced...I bet it is worn out also.

I did replace the shift lever, I'm on my way to pick up a new brass washer. Should have everything back together later today.
