Default My 2018 Heritage Review/First Harley Experience

TL;DR - Unless you're 5 feet tall and weigh about 150 pounds, give this bike a HARD pass.

Im going to keep this as detailed as possible, without going into a long rambling post. Please note this is simply 1 rider's opinion, and it is NOT meant to be a personal attack on riders, companies, brands, or (insert random cause of the week here.)

For starters.. this is my 3rd heritage .. in a row.. in less than a year. Yes, you read that 100% correct. In less than a year, Ive gone through THREE Heritage Softails. The first was an Anniversary Edition 03 (that was absolutely PERFECT for me in EVERY possible way) Rode it less than a month, all the lights went out. Took it back to dealership where they proceeded to keep the bike for almost 3 STRAIGHT MONTHS. Couldnt figure it out.. which isnt a surprise, they were working on it like 3 hours a week. (That's a story for another time, but it sets the overall tone for my experiences to follow.)

Instead of giving me my money back, they convince me to trade the bike in on a brand new, 2018 Heritage. They gave me a pretty decent deal on my trade too, added a chunk of change to it as a way of apologizing I guess. I thought it was nice of them anyways.

.... and here's where it gets FUN!

I put 1k miles on the bike. Take it in for service. No problems. I get it out of service, and a week later, my bike begins making.. what I can only describe, as the most GOD AWFUL SCREECHING sound on planet ****ing EARTH. Metal was grinding metal.. at about 2 billion decibels. Even at 80+ mph on the freeway, with a helmet on, the ONLY thing you could hear was the steady horrifying sound of what seemed like metal grinding metal.

Needless to say, I immediately took the bike in for service. They kept it 2 days. "Nope, bike is fine. Have a nice day!"

I get it home, and the next day... grind grind grind. Back to dealership I go. "Nope. Bike is fine."

Repeat.

For over a month.

During that time, I noticed a few things. 1 - The sound was steady, no matter what the speed I was traveling. 2 - It ONLY did this once the bike "heated up." If the roads were wet, or it was raining, it WOULD NOT do it. 3 - If you let the bike sit for a while and it cooled, no noise. Take it back to the dealership. I point out these observations to the dude, and he's like "ok." ... 2 days later. "Nope. Bike is fine.. we want 125 dollars for the service call." When I turned very red faced and asked them to repeat that, I was told it wasnt covered by warranty unless they found a problem. (yeah, you read that correctly.) After a bit of terse conversation. The guy says to me "look, the GM rode the bike, the ASM rode the bike, 2 techs rode the bike, the lead tech rode the bike. There's nothing wrong with it. But we'll wave the fee this last time." He said this very "down my nose" matter of factly. Like I was some brain dead idiot that couldnt ride.

I left the dealership, VERY angry at this point... and I didnt even make it back home... GRIIIIND GRIIIIIND GRIIIINND... I turned around mid-freeway in an absolute fury and went back to the dealership. This time... I *wasn't* polite. At all. See, at this point, I had already told them how to replicate the problem and what the problem was.. and now it was doing it AGAIN. I drove STRAIGHT into the dealership, and I went off. I was through being polite. As far as I was concerned, this thing was a timebomb waiting to blow and take me AND my wife with it. Within minutes, I had pretty much every "big boss" at that dealership around me arguing for a good 15 minutes. Finally I got told "ok show us the problem." So I go outside, and I ride the bike around the lot. The bike had cooled.. but you could BARELY hear the sound sitting on the bike, I knew it was about to start up again, I could HEAR it.. but all these big bad harley guys couldnt.. so I pulled back up with a smile on my face. Told them it's doing it. Got told "We heard nothing, your bike is fine." I took the keyfob off my belt, and thrust my hand out to the manager. Said to him "Ride it. Right now. You get around this building ONE TIME and insist everything is fine, I will personally apologize to every person in this building and never come back."

Needless to say, he took the keys got on, and took off. He didnt even make the first turn "GRIIIIIIND GRIIIIIIND GIRIIIIIND" The hilarious part was the ASM telling me that "the 2018's make a different noise than previous generat...." RIGHT as this thing got ear splittingly loud. He stopped talking mid sentence. GM comes back around pale as a ghost, all I did when he pulled up was look at him and raise my eyebrows. Then I said, very snippy "Any other questions, or can we ALL agree now I am NOT crazy and there is a SERIOUS problem with this bike?" They took the bike inside without so much as a word. Nobody would make eye contact with me.

Now, I could go into detail about the 2 MONTHS that followed as they poked at this and prodded at that and replaced this part and that part.. all the while me having NO bike and still being expected to make every payment on time while calling both the dealership and Harley every other day.... but I wont.

I'd LIKE to say "they pulled the bike and replaced it with a brand new one" - But I cant.

I ended up trading in THAT bike too.. and yes, I took a bath on their broken bike.

Sooo.. here we are on 2018 Heritage #2.

Its uncomfortable on long rides, the floorboards are up WAY too high, the sundowner seat is by far the worst seat Ive ever sat on in 20 years of riding, there's no way to change the floorboards position. They are permanently stuck like that. In short, aside from being one of the most uncomfortable bikes Ive ever ridden, it's allright. Im not going to put the ridiculous amount of money into customizing it and changing things around just to make it a passable ride, and soon as my taxes come back, I'll be going for a street glide, or more likely, an Indian

Oh I almost forgot. The dealership never did figure out the problem, and sent the bike back to Harley Davidson so it could be taken apart.

I was told last week (4 months after I proved there was a problem) that HD had informed them it was "an issue with the belt drive", but no other specifics.

To give you a general idea of what I personally gave up during this ordeal..

a $2800 Honda ACE Initial Trade
a $320 Registration @ BMV/DMV
a $130 Insurance 1st payment.
2 x $150 payments
--
a $600 registration @ BMV/DMV
a $150 Insurance upgrade payment (03 -> 18)
a $450 first service call
2x $400 payments
--
a $300 Registration @ BMV
a $450 first service call
3x - $450 payments.

---
I was never compensated for any of this lost/spent money...

They've completely cleaned out my savings, and as of now, my 19k heritage is going to cost me 24k. So yeah, I think my next bike is gonna be an Indian. lol

Should have contacted HD Corporate long ago the first time this issue repeated itself and was not repaired correctly the first time. There are more avenues then just the selling dealer to have things taken care of. Live and learn.

Sorry for all your mishaps and unfortunate dealings with service. I will never take my bike back to a dealer for service as I have similar stories to tell, all though they pale in comparison to yours.

Regarding the 2018 Heritage, for me it's very comfortable but getting the right position certainly matters and is different for everyone.

*chuckle*

Believe me... I was calling HD Corp almost daily. They basically gave me the "Oh well, sorry about your bad luck!" speech. Which was a sincere shock to every single HD rider I cam across, but apparently that's the way they are choosing to go.

I wish you the best of luck with the current bike and that you can eventually get your butt on the bike that fits you.

I also found the floorboards to be very high and I had a cramped feeling on the bike. I'm going to get a 2016 or 2017 Heritage.

Default My 2018 Heritage

I had a few issues with my bike, but all were fixed at the dealership. The latest one was a noise that I could not describe very well, except that it sounded scratchy at low speeds or decelerating. Looked everywhere for possible answers. including here. Well, come to find out it was the gas cap! Was replaced and all is well. People often say really bad things about dealerships, but I have to say that Cape Cod Harley service department has been phenomenal, so is the dealership in Portland Maine. My two cents.

Yeah . . . I wasn't overly thrilled with the 18 I rode. (As I've stated before.)
The 114 had torque but sounded like a broken dishwasher.

Nice susp & brakes, but wasn't as comfy as 17 & prior.
I did like the tach in the speedo thing.

A slightly juiced 96 or 103 TC would be fine for me (I just want the damn
6 sp!!)
And you can buy one a few yrs old for like . . . 1/2 ??!!!

Put a fairing on it & call it a day.
