Hey, currently in Elkins...headed down to Beckley tomorrow...have two days to burn before we head to Maggie Valley...Can you guys recommend the best roads to ride in the Beckley area? N, W, S, E doesnt matter Im there for two days.....THANKS
Weather permitting, you should definitely look at taking RT 219 south then working your way west over to Summersville.
Map shows Rt 15 (scenic) but I don't remember ever riding on that road so use discretion.
You could also go farther south on RT 219 (past Marlinton) and then take RT 35/55 west towards Summersville, which is also scenic but is a shorter ride than RT 15.
RT 19 (south) from Summersville will take you over the New RIver Gorge Bridge and there's an overlook on the north side of the bridge as well as a very tiny road that runs underneath the bridge if you have time to explore.
Summersville to Beckley via RT 19 is just a "hop, skip and a jump".
The Harper Road exit (offf of I-77/64) is "motel and restaurant row"!
I haven't been there in a few years but I used to stay at the Quality Inn as it had (or had" a lounge on site that served food and you're within a short walk of many other restaurants and even a Hooters!
Rt 3 out of Beckley north to Rt 97 north to Marmet. From there take Rt 61 back to Oak Hill and 19 back to Beckley. Be sure to stop at the UBB Miners memorial in Whitesville, lot of interesting reading there on coal in WV. Rt 3 out of Beckley south, follow it all the way to Sweet Springs, changes to VA 311. Follow it to I64 for a short jump and pick up Rt 60 in White Sulpher Springs. Follow 60 to the Rt 19 intersection and head back to Beckley.

The 3rd highest bridge in the US, you really don't want to miss that if you're in the area.

IF. you're looking for a "backroad experience" when taking RT 3 out of Beckely and just before you enter the town of Whitesville, there's a "T" intersection at Clear Fork Rd. (One Stop sevice station just past thius intersection on RT 3).
You can take Clear Fork Road all the way back to RT 3 (called Harper Rd in Beckley) by staying on the pavement while passing through the commnities of Dorothy, Ameagle, Artie, Clear Creek and you will then cross over Spruce Mtn (NOT Spuce ****).
When you come to the next intersection (under the expressway) turn right at the stop sign and keep goiing until you pass under the expressway again and shortly afterwards you will come to another intersection (Sand Branch Rd & Dry Hill Rd) keep going straight on Dry Hill Rd and it will take you back to RT 3 (Harper Rd) within a mile or so town.
IF you decide to take this route, fill youir tank at the One Stop in Whitesville, there's only ONE gas station (Clear Creek) until you get within a mile of RT 3.
