Motorcycle Insurance DiscussionThis is the place to discuss what type of Motorcycle Insurance you carry or any problems or good experiences you've had with certain companies.
I'm a new rider and am not quite sure if I'm getting the appropriate coverage-levels for my (new) 2012 Forty-Eight. As I said, I am new to riding and am taking the Rider's Edge course, beginning this Thursday. I went through Progressive, with an agent my family has used for years. But, I have heard that the coverage I have, may be on the high-end... possibly unnecessarily high. Let me know what you think, all advice is appreciated! I should also say that I unfortunately do not know much about the insurance business, all I do know, is that I want my bike, itself, fully covered... as it is brand-new.

I have a PUP or personal umbrella policy on top of 100/300 on my bike.Yet to hear anyone mention this but it's pretty easy to get sued these days.Say you are in an accident and someone dies?Do you think $100,000 is going to cover a settlement?
The policy covers me,my home, bike, car, truck etc..for 1 million above and beyond my auto policies.Cost me around $300 a year.
Just like in real estate its all about location, location, location. WHERE you live determines more about your premiums than anything else except your driving record.
I live in a state that has a very high level of UNINSURED drivers with NO DRIVER's licenses. Every day I hear about someone arrested for DUI for the umpteenth time.
Comparing premiums is a ridiculous exercise. The insurance carriers determine the risk level in an area and then determine the rates. Some dont even want to play here. Progressive quoted me $4200 a year on a (then) new 2010 StreetGlide and my 1999 FXR2. I told the agent he was on crack and he responded Progressive did not want to play in my sandbox. I am now paying about $850 a year with GEICO. I am 62 with a spotless driving record with NO ACCIDENTS in my driving career. Thats with minimum coverages.
I just went through getting insurance on my 2012 SG. I called Allstate and they were $600 for the year. I then called Foremost who I have had on bikes in the pass and they were $328 a year. I had them go middle of the road with a $500 ded. Think 50/100 and got uninsured too.
From what I have seen Foremost has always been the least expensive for me anyway
I went to Rider Insurance this year after Nationwide was raising my rate $61 for no reason that could find. Rider is a specialty company that only writes motorcycle ins. Problem is they only write policies in about seven states. If you have a good driving record, there rates are excellent. You can check online to see if they cover your state.
