1985 FXRS Primary Chain and Nylon Shoe . Dry for ???
Well, was looking like a good spring. Major work out of the way, maybe a cam in the FLHS, ... when I have time. Had the batteries on a tender for a while. Both bikes fired up great. Like I only ran them a day ago. Late last year my FXRS had a little noise in the primary. Some random clacking. I only rode it a little after that to try to see what was going on. I'll leave it til spring. Bike has 20,000 miles on it. I was in the inner primary to do trans seals and stuff a year or 2 ago. All good. I would always check under it, no leaks. Tonight I went to look in the primary. Dry. Like a tablespoon came out from the plug. Drain plug magnet not too bad. Not clean either. I tool the derby cover off. Clutch pack seemed nice and tight. I took the inspection cover off and, chain could touch the top of the inner primary if you held it up (I think that's the noise). I don't know how much side play they are supposed to have, I can deflect it about 1/4 inch. Another thing, the nylon tensioner, it wasn't tight in it's mount, like you could pivot it to the left and right. That's not normal is it ? I had never thought to try to move it like that.
It's dirty where the inner primary meets the engine case. I'll have to clean it and look for cracks. I'll check for loose bolts, but things are never that easy!! Compensator was tight.
As it is I think I will get a new primary chain, a nylon tensioner shoe, and an outer and inner primary gasket kit. I hope there are no cracks!

It's should be pretty obvious where there might be a leak.. The underside should be caked with oil and dirt and possibly road grime.. Maybe when you last worked on it
"I was in the inner primary to do trans seals and stuff a year or 2 ago.", you didn't properly tighten the chain adjuster and forgot to put in a new quart of primary fluid..
