Loud Whir from Primary at Idle?
Thanks for your thoughts
Pulling in the clutch and putting her into gear makes the sound stop.
A recent clutch adjustment and new primary oil did not change the sound. It seems to be getting louder.
Do any of you have experience with this situation? Throw out/release bearing? Any guestimates on cost to repair?
Thanks for your thoughts
Always check primary chain tension, when hearing noises from the primary... That could be an easy, cheap fix....
But primary noise that gets louder, yet disappears/changes when pulling the clutch, could also be a bad inner primary bearing.. If you don't do the work yourself, it will cost more for the labor, than parts... Depending on the labor rates in your neck of the woods, the labor could be a lot more than the parts...
If you never replaced the auto primary chain tensioner, you may need to replace that too..
FYI... in 2007, all Harley models got a new Compensator and Auto Primary Chain Tensioner (#39929-06A). Both had problems for several years, until they were updated.
The comp became fairly reliable in 2014, and the auto primary chain tensioner became reliable in 2010 (#39929-06B). There was another upgrade to the auto chain tensioner in about 2021 (#39929-06C).
If you have already replaced the auto primary chain tensioner to a "B" or "C" version, it should be fine. But the "A" versions were known to over tighten the primary chain, put big stresses on the IPB (Inner Primary Bearing) which causes the IPB to need replacement.
If you are capable and confident in working around the primary, remove the outer primary and give look as to what is happening.
Look for a banjo string tight primary chain.. That could indicate the need for a new style auto tensioner and IPB.....
If you are not confident in working around the primary, find a good independent, or trusted HD shop to do the diagnosis and repair. The auto tensioner is a piece of cake, but the IPB can be a bear if it's race has walked on the output shaft.....
Good luck with your diagnosis and repair...
