Why export a Harley Route Planner file to a gfx file?
Ive been using the Harley Route Planner website and the app since 2020, first with my 2020 Road Glide Special and its Boom Box GTX system and now with my 2025 CVO Road Glide and its Skyline system. The Route Planner is not perfect, but its made improvements, and I used it very effectively to create and ride all of Route 66 and every other mile on a round trip from the Atlantic to the Pacific. I also use it for a simple day ride to go get a hamburger.
i typically make a route on the Route Planner website using a PC. The next day, as I prep for the ride, I open the Ride Planner app on my iPhone, find that route, and Bluetooth it to my bike. No thumb drive involved at all. I might even make some last minute routes just using the app.
Ive never exported one of my Ride Planner routes, but today I did so, wanting to bring a route into another GPS system for a friend. I was surprised to see the Harley Route Planner then ask me if I wanted the gpx file in a Skyline format, a Boom Box format, or a basic gfx format.
My routes have worked fine for the last six years in the Boom Box and Skyline systems without this export step. Why export a Harley file to a Harley format? Doesnt the Route Planner read the file as it is?
They just did that recently, Don't know what is the difference, but if you are sharing the Route with a group that have both systems, you have to use a hybrid flashdrive, and use the bottom option. The Skyline bikes use a USB C adapter while the older bikes use USB B.
GPX files are plain text files that hold XML instructions and data that GPS systems use to identify the route you designed. I imported each option into myrouteapp.com and did not see a variance in how that tool represented the route. Exporting from myrouteapp.com I use GPX version 1.1 for the file. Historically that format will import into all 3 of the HD systems and other GPS systems correctly.
I have not had a chance to compare the text of each HD Ride Planner yet to see the exact variances.
