Default How to know if my CV is a rebuildable core?

My 02 was in real bad shape when I acquired it, last year put it all back together and it was running pretty good. Fast forward to now… it’s running like absolute garbage. I know it’s carb related, my dilemma is do I rebuild the stock cv40 and add a jet kit etc… or buy a knock off or a Mikuni. If there any tips or tricks to rebuilding the stock carb and or parts to add to get it right would be greatly appreciate.

Rebuild it. I just rebuilt a 55 year old carburetor for an old Kohler generator on Saturday, it runs like new. The carb was literally plugged with green decomposed gasoline and the motor had not been started in 50 years. After a good cleaning and rebuild, it started on the second pull of the rope.

Don't forget to do the intake manifold seals, they could be leaking if they have not been changed recently. What jets are in it currently? If you need parts, contact CV Performance. I have their Velocity Needle in mine. 45 pilot jet and 170 or 180 mainjet depending on 883 or 1200 should work.

I agree with John with one caveat, which is if there is significant corrosion IN the body of the carb. I just threw out a CV40 that was on a motor I bought which had gotten rain in it over a period of time. There was a lot of corrosion inside the carb that would have been nearly impossible to remove/repair so I chucked it. If your carb is in that kind of shape replace it. I would opt for buying a good used HD carb and rebuilding it vs buying a knock-off. You could go with the smallest mikuni but it could be a bit of a pain to tune. The CV carb with the kit John mentioned above is pretty much good to go right out of the box. The fact that you had the bike running good leads me to believe the carb you have is good and just needs a good cleaning and tune.

We rebuild carbs, we do not buy $20 knockoffs from the Bay. Good luck.

The CV40 is a great carb and more than capable for most street Harleys. Rebuild it and enjoy many trouble free miles.
