Default Loaner Harley Tools

I've been wrenching on my own sleds since being gifted my first one ( a basket case ) by my brother in 1976. Wrenching on newer models though, as you know, requires "special tools" that, like everything else for a Harley-Davidson, comes with a hefty price tag for your trouble. Then I had this idea and wanted to throw it out here to see if it would get any traction as a resource to people like me who want to do their own wrenching but don't want to buy a $300 - $500 tool that they will use one time. The alternative being, taking it to a shop that has the tools.

Listen, I've got nothing against any reputable shop. That's what they do and there's plenty of biz for people who aren't interested in wrenching on their sleds. Ive got a shelf full of Jims Tools for earlier Twin Cams ( 2000 - 2005 ) to start this off. I now need tooling for 2006 and later ( specifically for the 6-speed trans ) that I would really rather not have to buy but, if this experiment doesn't work then my choices are to: 1. Buy the tools ( $$$ ), 2. Take it to a shop that has the tools ( $$$$ ) or, 3. Don't do the transmission work at all.

So here's my idea. Feel free to suggest changes but keep it on topic please. This is intended to help everyone who may have the same need.

Tools are being LOANED, not "rented".

Borrower pays trackable shipping both ways.

Borrower pays refundable replacement cost deposit.

Once tool is returned complete and undamaged, deposit is refunded to Borrower.

If the Borrower doesn't return the tool, loses it, breaks it or makes it unusable, the owner has the deposit to replace what is broken / missing / damaged and the remaining balance of the deposit is refunded.

Im sure that there would also be a way to barter or trade somehow here too ( tool - tool, tool - part, tool -service... )

Thoughts anyone?

That thought has been thrown around here for years.
Occasionally you will see in the ads tools for rent like that.
Nothing concrete has come of it because of it's rare need in my opinion.

I agree that it may be rare and, maybe it's just that I'm an old head that remembers a time when a "special tool" was something that you fabricated out of whatever tool or stock that you had in the garage.

It also may be that if someone is going to rent a tool, they might as well buy it. That's why my suggestion was that this idea wasnt to rent the tools to someone but lend it to them. The only expense then is the shipping costs which would be a fraction of what the tool costs or the labor for a shop ( with the tools ) to do the work.

Not sure how hard it would be to add a "tool loaner" page to this site? Guys looking to borrow a tool could post their needs and anyone willing to loan a specific tool could answer their post....Simple, maybe.

That was the idea. An online version of an old school idea. Everything is expensive enough, being able to borrow a tool instead of having to buy it to use one time and then have it sit on a shelf in the garage or trying to sell it on Feebay, just seems like a better option. I know it USED to be ( well before there even was an "internet" ) but, again, I am old. I grew up in a different time when this kind of "having each other's back" was the norm.

Mod, can you add a "Tool Loaner" page and move this thread there as suggested above? Thanks😎

sounds like a good idea. You know someone will mess it up. I would add a small rental fee.

The loaner has to box it up and drive to the shipper

I suggested something like this a few years ago and it really went nowhere at that time. Hopefully your idea does OP. I'd participate.......

I think it is a very good idea and agree that for the DIY'rs here it is a big plus. Maybe there could be a place in the sales section titled just for that. Tool Loans or something like that.
