Ok people. I have finally got my rear shocks figured out. I am on a bit of a budget. So, I went after the shock oil. Only drained out about 6 oz of oil from both shocks. They held vacuum and pressure good. So filled with 10oz of oil. Rode it 100 miles today and checked for leaks. No leaks. Wow, what a difference that made !!!!!!!!!! Completely happy with them now.
So now, I would like to go after the front forks.
A little background. 2008 ultra classic. I rarely ever ride 2 up anymore and am on a bit of a budget. I do not want to lower the front any. Just want a full rebuild kit.
So, what suspension kit/manufacturer do you recommend? I have been looking at Progressive. But wanted to get some input from people that has messed with this stuff.
My plan is to 10 weight this summer to see if want 15. Some people mix 10 and 15. Then do progressive springs over winter. About $130 for springs. Mine is 2007. So at that age I'll probably do seals up because it is so old. As your 2008 is.
If the seals are not leaking. I would leave them alone. I have several bikes that are from 24 to 20 years old and still have the original seals. They will let you know when it's time to change them. Short of a catastrophic damage to the fork tube causing massive leakage, a fork seal will just start to seep and give you plenty of warning that it's time for replacement. Just my 2 nickels of advice.
Yes, mixing 10 & 15 will give you 12.5 wt. Just make sure you stick to the same brand so there is no incompatibility. Or, just for the hell of it - Try ATF+4. Works the treat on my bikes.
Just putting fresh fluids in the forks will make a difference. I would go with Screaming Eagle heavy fork oil or 10-12 weight maxima is easy to find at metric shops.
I think the oil change is going to be the start. See how it goes.
Not knowing how much and what was put in it, if ever. I will start from fresh with new oil.
