when i put assembly in tank there is about 1/4-1/2 inch gap between tank and top of assembly ,it will sit flush and bolt up if i push on it almost feels like a spring on the bottom ,ive taken it out and put it back in a bunch of times and still get the same results ,

is it normal to have to push down on the top of assembly to close gap and bolt to top tank?

I've taken mine out a couple of times on my '03 Heritage FI, and the was a slight gap at the top and bottom but not 1/2" It was probably 1/8"-1/4" at most. I think it is the sock filter at the bottom of the fuel pump that you're having to push down on. That would be my best guess.

Ya that's what it looks like I'm assuming it is a tight fit to keep pump secure with a the vibration? When you did yours and had the small gap did yours also feel like a spring when you pushed it down? I did a search and found a few other people with the same issue but they didn't get any responses so thanks for helping , I should note that it goes right down and bolts right up. I was just concerned as I've never done one on a bike (hundreds on cars) and they all just hung in the tank close to the bottom

Did you have any fuel delivery issues in this? I am seeing the exact same thing. A small gap with some resistance on the last half inch. To add on to this issue, I stall out about 10 seconds after pressing the assembly down. Will idle all day is the assy is sitting there loose and high, but press it down to put the bolts back in and I stall out. Maybe a fuel pickup issue?
