Default Wrong 2011 FXDWG fuel tank,


I ordered a new painted tank and I went to install my fuel pump and it wont fit. I learned later that my fuel tank (the damaged one I had to send back to HD to get my new replacement) has a indent for the bottom of the fuel pump to fit down into the tank. The fuel pump came out with no problems due to my old tank having the indent. Above is the picture of my new tank showing there is NO INDENT. The indent would be on the ridge next to the mounting clips shown in the picture. Has anyone ever installed a fuel pump in this kind of tank? Has anyone ever seen a fuel tank without the indent. Has anyone seen a fuel pump where the bottom is 2" or less in Diameter? Any help would be appreciated.

I've recently changed tanks on mine (from a 09 street bob tank to an unknown year super glide tank). Removed all the guts from the old one and installed them into the new one. No issues other than the top plate having different bolt pattern. Your photo looks exactly like the inside of both of my tanks (neither had an indent. SB tank was the smaller of the two). I'm pretty sure (not 100%) the fuel pump assembly on Dynas are the same.

Installation requires a bit of finesse. Try starting with the pump assembly bit sideways with the pump going in first with the rest of it kinda upside down (facing up), then pivot, rotate, push, rotate, pivot, pull, rotate, push, rotate, pivot, push, rotate, and it should just slide right in there. Make sure the filter sock at the end lays flat across the bottom of the tank and doesn't get bunched up. Also, you will want to install the 'exit' hose that connects to the bottom/back of the tank before the pump goes in.

I really appreciate your response. I have played with for about 5 hours. In that 5 hours I would think it would have accidentally fallen into place. I'm not going to give up.

Nothing ever 'accidentally falls into place' with these things.

I looked up the pump assembly parts for '11 FXDWG (yours) and '09 FXDB (mine), and part numbers are the same. What you're trying to do is exactly what I just did a month ago. Keep trying. It is kinda one of those square peg in a round hole type of deals but it WILL go in. Resist the urge to reach for a hammer.

I promise not to take a hammer to it. AND I'm not giving up! Thanks for checking the part #s for me. Monday am I'm back on it. This weekend my grand daughter grads from HS. Taking some time off for that. I will post back monday evening.

I actually made progress today. I got the pump, filter housing and mounting clip installed. Wired everything up and no love. The pump didn't turn on and the fuel gauge didn't work. The 7 or so connectors only go on 1 way. The lights in the console all lit up so I know the power is getting to the switch. Checked the fuses all good. I have 2 questions. There is only 1 wire going to the pressure regulator. It touches the outside of the PR and goes on to the fuel pump mounting clip and is dead ended there. Is that supposed to be grounded to the inside of the gas tank like the fuel gauge sending unit? I honestly can't see that it does because the part of the plastic clip it rests in doesn't touch the metal of the tank under the FP mounting clip. Since my fuel gauge sending unit IS grounded on the metal inside of the tank, Should the (new) Gas tank have the mounting tabs scuffed to bare metal so it contacts the frame to ground? After putting a gallon of gas in the tank and opening everything back up again, I noticed all the inside the tank connectors were wet with gas. Could that be a problem? I hope someone has some suggestions. Thanks.

Looks like you got it to fit. nice.
Everything sounds like it's normal to me and should work. The fuel pump assembly is made out of plastic along with the tabs that slide into the clips, so scuffing won't help. I don't remember anything being grounded to the tank. Connectors would be submerged on a full tank, so that's ok. With only 1 gallon of gas, your fuel gauge will read empty anyway. I did take some photos of my swap, and when I get home later I'll see if I have any that might clarify some things. Mostly the strange single wire that seems to do nothing. I vaguely remember it.

Make sure you remembered to re-connect the external fuel line and that it's connected/seated properly. I only mention because I was found guilty of this. Check fuses again? Battery condition?

New battery kept on a tender. Engine turned over like it should. No fuses blown. I'm thinking it has to be a ground???

Very good possibility it's ground. I would buy that over a bad fuel pump, which would be the next thing I would diagnose.

I've attached some photos of what I did. Not sure if it would be any help to you. That lone purple wire that appears to come from the pump itself goes past the regulator and connects to the top of the plastic assembly, maybe there's a lead that connects to the top of the backbone of the tank and grounds it? Seems very plausible. Only way to find out really is to take the assembly out again. Which should be a piece of cake since you got plenty of practice!
