OUCH!!! That's as bad as putting something back together and you look down and there is a something left that got overlooked > eek
That is not a stand spring, this type of spring is used to hold something closed or assit opening. Usually it is in the hinge section and 1 wire is pushing against a non moving base and the other is working on the hinged component.
I can think of nothing except maybe a softail toolbox lid.....

I don't have a toolbox so isn't it. I agree with what you're saying. It
popped off when I took the bike off the lift. Took it to Harley and they
said it didn't look like a Harley part. My lift is home made and is all wood
and a pipe, see pic. Thanks to all of you guys for your input!!
