I have an 02 heritage thats fuel injected, when i bought it it had screamin eagle slip on mufflers on it and of course it wasnt even close to loud enough and i didnt like the look, i got a set of long shots from my cousin who has the same bike as me including the yr, only difference is his is carb anyway i put these pipes on and now between 25 to 40 it acts as if it has bad gas in it only it isnt constant it comes and goes however it runs great the faster i go and if its just sitting idling or just revving it up. some people say it needs to be retuned but the local dealer says that harleys werent tuned before 04. other people say its running lean and i will burn up the cylinders and still some say to get a power commander, a couple people said i could put power cones in the head pipes and that may solve the problem but that it would still need to be tuned. these long shots have no baffles in them. i just spent 7 grand on this bike so im to broke to get a power commander and the other pipes arent wanted so now im not sure what to do, i def dont want to burn up the cylinders either any help would be greatly appreicated. also i am new here so im not sure if im posting in the right place.
Well you found the right place for your questions,, research a bunch of stuff here,, there are volumes of info,,
Yeah you changed the air/fuel ratio alright,, but your engine won't blow up tomorrow.
A good bet will be to change too new spark plugs and keep an eye on how they look.
You'll get much more feed back,, just sit back awhile and digest it all.
Good Luck.
Thanx i will do just that, im wondering if i can get away with using the power cones like some say, just found out it will cost almost a grand for a retune n i dont have that

When you put on new pipes you need to re-calibrate your fuel injection. Buy a power commander and you can program it with your phone. You'll need to know the manufacturer and model of your pipes. That is all that is wrong, you just need to re-calibrate the computer for your fuel injection. Here's one from JP Cycles:
Im broke, i just spent the money i had to get this bike, i dont have the money to get a commander is there any cheaper solution besides putting the other ones back on? The guy i got them from doesn't remember who made them n theres no markings on them, they are long shots but i have no other info on them

Borrow one from a friend of yours is your only other solution or you will keep having problems with mis-firing and back-firing, sorry. Either that or put the old pipes back on.

Back when I bought my first Sportster I spent everything that I had on it and didn't have any money left for anything else. The PO had put drag pipes on it and it ran like crap unless it was WFO. I found a thread about "lollipops" on this forum that helped. The power cones help to add backpressure to the exhaust and change the air/fuel ratio. If you weld a washer to the end of a bolt and then drill a hole in the pipe to put the bolt through the washer will restrict the flow and create the backpressure that you lost with the new pipes. You can add or remove pressure by changing the angle of the washer. The best part is that the lollipops don't change the sound like baffles do. I had bolts, washers, and a welder so it was free for me but any machine shop should fix you up for a couple of bucks a piece.

i had ordered the power cones last night and am just waiting for them to arrive, should i wait n try them? i thought about attempting to fab my own set of long shots using my old head pipes and then high temp painting them but i wasnt sure how that would work, the stock ones are 1 3/4" where as the long shots are 2", my next ? is on the front head pipe it looks as though a cone was built in because its smaller when it first comes out but gets bigger a couple inches down????????? i also noticed that both head pipes run hot like almost 400 degrees but the further back u get the cooler it gets, is this normal?
my 04 heritage had the exact same problem. its injected and has longshots on it sometimes not everytime when cruising along at 50-55 it would cough and stumble and then pick back up and run fine. I put a set of v&h standard baffles in them and a fuelpak that I set up according to there web site and I have never had it act up since (5yrs)
