Hey everyone have a 2005 softail standard carbed 88" has exhaust and intake with 19,500 miles on it. Rode it the other day and started having a grinding noise from the primary. The noise Happens when bike is not accelerating. The noise is at idle or let off the throttle and coast in gear. Clutch engaged or realeased and changes tone with rpm of engine. Removed inspection plate and checked tension of primary chain and is good... I need to take the primary cover off and inspect just thought I'd see if anyone had this same issue so I know what to look for when I get the cover off thanks!!
I would put money on your chain being loose and rubbing the inside of the inner primary case. Under load the chain is pulled tight, when at idle or decelerating the chain goes a bit slack and can slap the case, it happens all the time. 5/8"-7/8"of play cold doesn't leave much room between a slack chain and the case. Pop the primary cover and look for witness marks on the case (top side just aft of the stator rotor is the most common spot). If that is it, adjust the chain and motor on!
Full of oil and chain was tight. Took apart and the compensator nut was loose. Cleaned everything up and going back together with it now. What does the compensator nut torque to?
Was the nut really lose or did it just appear to be? Once the alternator rotor spline strips and it is pretty fragile, it spins and is only driven by the compensator spring. Then the face wears and lets the sprocket move over causing the chain to nip making noise.
Think the torque is 165 ft lbs. Be sure to clean off all the old loctite, prime with proper primer or at minimum be sure all oil is off threads with laquire thinner and use permanent grade loctite

For your 2005 you have to follow the updated procedure outlined in the M-1170 Service bulletin:
When I tried the M1170, when I did the degree, the compensator wound around and I scratched my head on how to pull it down, mark it and then see the degree. Never did figure it out to make any sense and just did the 165.
