Your gonna have to have to get the heads ported. It'll be really hard to get the hp up w/out this. Your also going to have to decide how much compression your going to run this will determine the cam you are going to use.

I did what your are doing now, a couple of years ago.

I started buying what I thought would run good and I did it piece by piece.

the problems started when the compatibility of some of the stuff I wanted started to conflict with what I had already pruchased.

As stated above, deciding your compresion ratio is important!

Equely important is your ignition choice! I needs to match you compresion to help against detonation.

Parts i recomend you stay away from are: Screamin Eagle heads.

theses head have a small combustion chambers, and they cannot be adjusted to make your compression correct!

I sold all my stuff last wintner, and bought a complete big bore kit from Head-Quarters

with matched components.

It had ported OE heads that were machined to make 10 to 1 comp. and compresion releases instaled.

valve springs to match the cams, and an Ignition box to match the compresion.

I also got recomendations on jetting my carb!

I have 500 miles on this engine and I couldnt be happier!

You are going to get a million different opinions.

I went thru this when I bought my bike new.
I didn't want to drag race from light to light, I just wanted to be able to pass effortlessly without down shifting, so I did a 95" kit from the get-go..

What I found out was this, flat top SE pistons create the best turbulence for street riding. The 06' and above heads flow 10% intake & 16% exhaust better than previous years, so just a minor clean up brings them around.
Cam selection is the most important. I chose the 204 cam because the bike is relatively light like yours, and I didn't want to limit my RPM to just the lower portion of the power band. The 204 has a very early exhaust close event which raises your static compression, so stick with the flat tops. To my surprise, it pulls like a freight train right off of idle and runs with great pull up to and over 4500 RPM.
Best of all, HD warranted my engine for 2 years.
So far, 4,000 miles, tons of power, decent mileage, NO pinging and perfect reliability.
If I could do it over, Iwouldn't change a thing.

Well, my plan was to take advantage of the kits on ebay. like the stg II big bore kit with the 203 cam. and maybe send my heads out for clean up. i don't want it so radical that it shortens the life of the motor.

George C is right, I want the same thing for my 06'deuce(can't get the pic to download yet), I have the stage 1 upgrade V&H pro pipe, SE air filter, race fueler. But I want more punch so I talked with the service manager at my local harley. I don't have alot of money to spend on huge upgrades like the performance heads-so he gave mea "low budget punch". This is what he told me:

95"big bore cylinders (you'll need the top-end gasket set & cam bearing kit)
S.E.Flat top pistons (you don't need the race tuner for these, but most of us already have them)
S.E. 204 CAMS (the 204 is better than the 203-they flatten out around 85 mph, and they require no new valve spring and head work.

Your looking at about 84hp and 92tq with this set-up. I'm still trying to convince my wife to let me buy the stuff-the local hd dealer says it'll be a gr$nd to install so I have to budget for it.

Those are great results!

Im using the 9.5 HQ pop-up with the .575 gear drive cams and there heads, I hope to get similar results!!

Duane

PS, to others that have posted...these HQ parts we are using are for there touring set ups, they are not the "hot rod" stuff. they are very relaible, and powerful!
