Default Harley Extended Service

When I purchased my used 2009 Harley Fatboy about three years I was offered the ESP program. I paid for part and the selling New Jersey Harley dealer picked up a couple years as part of my negotiations. I need nothing until two weeks ago. My compensator went bad. It took out the starter ring gear on the clutch basket. A Harley dealer in Jacksonville not only replaced my compensator, but entire clutch assembly. This means I got a new clutch. They also said my horn was weak and they replaced that also. The primary chain and tensioner were not changed. This week my bike sounded like the engine has sand and a loose nuts banging around. I set up an appointment for the next day. I took the bike in right after I made the call so they could start on it the next day. I got a call around 6PM saying my bike was all done. The front wheel bearing had come apart during the ride. I realized it was not the engine as I rode. It became very very clear the front bearing had issues. With the ESP program my charge was $50 dollars.. Ok great. The bearing cost $27 dollars and the labor was $110. Ok I could have done it myself. All I needed to do that was the proper bearing removal tool and another tool to drive the bearing or a big socket wrench. Plus luck getting the old bearing out and driving the new bearing straight. If I was home in my own shop I may have done it myself. Here is what my $50 bucks bought me. A complete repair with no worries. They replaced a burnt out turn signal light(free). The washed and completely detailed my bike. The windshield was bug coated, my chrome needed a polishing, the chrom wheels needed a good polish. Now the bike is beautifully detailed and all ready for Daytona starting this weekend.
I am happy for the value ESP has been for me, and the service from The Harley dealer in Orange Park Jacksonville FL

Yeah you lucked out and got your monies worth (depending on purchase price) on the repairs. Don't sell yourself short on the wheel bearing and race swap. It's perty easy as you probably know with a screwdriver and hammer to get the race and bearing out, and super easy tapping new ones and the bearings into place. I do dig the idea of a wash and detail. That's worth the price of admission IMHO...*lol
Btw, man you're one lucky Dog heading down to palm tree land and bikini's. Enjoy!

I know I bought my '06 Softail about a month ago. I was riding with the local HOG chapter to a Veteran's home to hand out some Valetine cards the kids in a local school made. My bike start to die out. I recognized it as lean engine condition. I took the bike to the Tampa Harley Dealer (nice guys) and told them what I thought and I went ahead and gave them a small laundry list of things I wanted to check, just in case. I had not yet had a service on the bike.
They found the following:
The lean problem was a bad fuel pressure regulator.
I had a bad tailight socket.
Brakes front, was a bad caliper (rebuilt and new fluid)
Rear bad caliper (rebuilt and new fluid)
Primary noise was the bearings and the tensioner show was cracking, they replaced it.
also tightened up a loose toe heel shifter.

I paid zero out of pocket. I was joking with them it was a 1500.00 repair and I paid 1500 for my unlimited mile plan.
I used to own a shop and can work on cars, but bikes I am not an expert and felt I did not want to deal with having to spend the money and time learning, so I went for the plan. I am glad I did it paid off and now I have a stress free and essentially paid off contract. I am hoping to never have a motor issue, but I know I am covered.

I've gone full circle on extended warranties. I think if you ride a lot, they're a good idea. It's true that a lot of stuff you can fix in your garage, but a lot of things don't happen in your garage.
I can understand not going with the warranty, but for me, it's worth it.

I got a great price in the Fatboy. I am sure the original owner took a beating. It is Sunglo red and everything has been chromed including the swingarm. The has custom risers and handlebars and upgraded running boards. I added a crash bar and pegs. I also put a single Mustang seat with backrest. I am 70 and the backrest helps so I don't have to hang on tight at 80 mph. I also added a windshield for longer trips. Memphis Shades makes a great detachable product. The bought the upgrades at Daytona last year. Pricing was much better and everything was installed for free. Plus I got to ride my bike into the vendor area for the installs. No parking a half mile away in the lots.

I am a positive recipient of HD ESP. I got my monies worth for mine. Now that I know a lot more how to work on them it would be a toss up.

I'm glad it worked out for you.
I too bought the ESP but never used it and don't regret getting it.
It's insurance.

BTW- in the future do us a favor and don't post a detailed comment in one paragraph.
It makes it difficult to follow.

An old boss of mine once told me that if I wanted maximum reading of my thoughts I needed to make my thoughts more easily readable.
Just try to use the return key every now and then

Below is your comments broken up as an example;

Can you negotiate on the price? Or is there a set price for the plans?

Hey thanks for the grammar lesson. I will mend my ways here on a motorcycle forum.

I negotiated the the price on the motorcycle, 10,000.00 dollars.
I got them to give me a credit of $200 dollars for a helmet and got them to pay for two years of the ESP plan. That was three years ago.

At the time I was looking for a late model private sale Fatboy. I looked at several Fatboys. Asking were in the $10-15k range. I stopped by the local Harley dealer and saw a beautiful 2009. I figured I would make an offer. They were asking $11,500.00. They did not lower the price on the service. I do not know how they handled the device pricing on their end. I purchased the bike the end of November in New Jersey. I suspect that had something to do with the price. Winter was just around the corner, plus Hurricane Sandy caused a shake up in people's spending.

Hell here it almost 5 years later and my house just got lifted this week. It has taken me this long just to get to the beginning of the construction project. My house suffered no interior damage! The Feds changed the base flood elevation. Therefore my house has to be elevated to meet the new standard. I got a &165,000.00 dollars grant for the for the project. My estimate was $245,000.00. Almost everywhere else you could build a new house. The corruption in New Jersey is systemic. Starting with the local city government and extending to every trade involved. They know you got $165,000.09 so they make sure they get every dime. You can't bring someone from say PA, say like my brother, who does house renovations. He does not have the necessary NJ approvals and licenses. You have be on an "approved" list. Plus he does not know the local subs. I am about ready to break something or someone.

Good to hear it worked out for you!

I'm a high mileage rider and won't own a Twin Cam without a warranty/ESP.

I have had an ESP on 5 different Twin Cams. 4 of them have more than paid for themselves...a couple of them well over twice what the ESP cost.

I still have 2 of them, so the probability is that the one that has not yet paid for itself will eventually.
