Default CLUNK when changing gears

Exuse me if this is a REAL dumb question, BUT I have ridden Ducati s all my life and last week brought a 2006 Fat Boy. When changing gears , doesnt matter whether its up or down I hear a CLUNK noise. Is this normal to Harleys or is there a trick to changing gears. It sounds horrible after my smooth Italien gearbox,

Dude,

This is a beautiful sound. I too had a crocket rocket back in the day. 2002 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-9R. It shifted smooth as silk. I now have a 2004 FatBoy. I too was concerned at first but this is the way things are in HD world. Everything is bigger and louder. Perfectly normal. Enjoy.

Same here, new H-D owner. I thought this was odd as well. I asked before and was told that this is normal.

I guess the clunk isa standard feature on Harley's, and optional on other bikes

Even going from a $17K Harley to a $35K Harley did not make any difference!

its usually only going into first gear..and only sometimes...

try changing trans fluid to a severe gear weight 75w-140 or 75w-90

The solid sound of american craftsmanship, you can hear those gears grabbing hold. Makes the same sound when you start it up, the starter engaging.

Try redline severe gear oil. It won't clunk as bad. I came from japanese bieks as well. It has been nearly 2 years and I am still not completely used to it.
