Default Chrome lower fork sliders

I went to the dealer yesterday for some warranty work on my ’07 Softail and they mentioned to me about my clunk in the front end under hard braking. HD came out with a, I guess you would call it a Tech-Note about the clunk. They say to replace the lower sliders. Hmm, well for $19.00 more, you can get chrome!! My dealer worked it up and I paid $116.00 (all the chrome chit to go with it) for chrome lowers, and I didn’t even get dirty! I think I’ll bring them a case or two of beer next week. Oh, the clunk is gone!!

Good luck - but that sounds like a crock!!!!!

I replaced my fork sliders for chrome just for cosmetic reasons. The clunk is still there. If you do a search on the clunk you'll find that it has nothing to do with the fork sliders whatsoever but with something else completely.

I reckon your dealer tightened the stem nut up whilst they did the forks, as soon as it loosens again the clunk'l be back.

Sounds like you got a good deal! But I am curious how the fork lowers could cause the clunk. They are just hollow tubes.

yep they got you..i worked for a dealer as a techfor 3 1/2 years and all we did was tighten the stem nut to get rid of it..the factory rep was the one that said thats what it is.to just tighten the neck nut..the bikes come in with very loose neck nut and who ever did the prep on the bike might not have tightend it..i worked with techs that never tightend neck bearings...thats why i quit and opened my own shop...i bet your bike looks good though..good luck.

I wouldn't say they "got him." It was all covered by warranty. The $116 was a voluntary chrome upgrade; a cheap one, I might add.
