Default Slip-on Muffler Mounting Help - 02 Heritage Softail Classic

Hello All,

I have a 2002 HD Heritage Softail Classic EFI. I had Screamin’ Eagle II slip-ons that were rough so swapping out. I found a set of HD slip-on mufflers Part# 65884-09 & 65886-09. I was told they were off a fatboy and were like new in the box so I bought them. My problem is that the mounts do not match up with the muffler bracket (black bar bolted on to the frame)

Question - is it possible to get the muffler bracket that fits the muffler and swap out my current bracket? If so, having a hard time finding the part.

Or, should I get a metal man to put a mount on the slip-on mufflers that fit my current bracket?

I was hoping that I could find a bracket and swap it out.

Lastly, will I have a performance hit with the swap? I was going to take it to get tuned via computer. I just bought the bike last year and the previous owner did a Stage 2 kit but only air filter and exhast and didn’t tune it.

Thanks in advance and happy riding.

I originally put Screamin' Eagle slip-on mufflers on my '03 Heritage, but that was back in July 2003.... I don't really remember the bracket or how they were installed.

However, if you look at a Fatboy OEM exhaust and a Heritage OEM exhaust, you will see they are very different in their look, orientation, and mounting.... When you buy slip-ons, they will usually be made to fit right where the OEM mufflers were...... Additionally, the Heritage has an exhaust crossover tube that's part of the muffler mount and connects with the front of each muffler. The Fatboy has a crossover in the head pipe of the exhaust, prior to the slip-on mufflers... just another possible "issue" trying to make Fatboy mufflers fit Heritage mounts....

Since you already had Screamin' Eagle slip-ons mounted on the Heritage, and the SE slip-ons for a Fatboy don't fit the SE mounts on the Heritage, I would believe the SE slip-ons for the Fatboy are totally different that the SE slip-ons for the Heritage, due to the differences in mounting location. So locating the brackets for the Fatboy slip-ons probably won't help you. I suspect you will have to make a custom mount to get them to work.

As for the tune, you mentioned "computer tune" so I'm assuming you have an EFI bike. Your Stage I (Stage II is usually a Stage I, plus a cam) normally has a high-flow air cleaner, high flow exhaust, and an HD EFI download (or other tune). Since you say it hasn't had a download/tune, it has been running lean. Get it tuned......

FYI... the old HD downloads are EPA compliant for their time and leaner than a good tune, but better than leaving the OEM factory tune in place....

You have a great bike with a solid engine..... Just make sure to deal with the spring cam tensioners if you haven't already...

Good luck with the mods....
