I'm new to the forum so I'm prolly posting this in the wrong place but here goes. I recently acquired an 04 softail that had some damaged and some missing parts. Worst thing is I need an engine and tranny for it . Now i've found what I think to be a good deal on a low miles 07 softail 96ci engine w/ 6 speed box complete with wiring harness and ecu. I'm already understanding that the 88b and 96b engines are different enough that the trannys aren't interchangeable but if i have the whole powertrain package is it a drop in swap? If not, does anyone know right off what kind of mods may be needed to get it in there?
How are your welding skills? The frames changed from 2007 to 2008 but so far as know, the change occurred in the rear fender struts. The exterior of the engines remained the same, in that, even of it won't bolt in, it will at least fit. But you may need to weld new engine tabs worst case.
Hopefully someone has done it and knows if the two are interchangeable. I'm curious as well.
I dont recall if all of the 2004 had FI or their was still a "carb version" did the 2004 have fuel injection? If not you will also need a gas tank with fuel pump.
I think the mounting and engine / tranny cases were basically the same for 88 B - 96 B. Just take some measurements, but the aftermarket engine like Ultima and S & S all B engines are the same from looking at the replacement specs
Didn't think about the FI vs Carb. But swapping to carb is easy enough. If FI, the tank is different inside to mount all the hardware that goes inside it. I just posted a video in the forum showing the guys of the EFI tank.
