A pleasant surprise on my wife’s 2017 softail slim! Anyone else experience this?
In March, I surprised my wife with a 2017 Softail Slim (non-S model) as a 5 year wedding anniversary present.
She loves the bike, and we’ve been adding mods over the past two months (seat, exhaust, engine guard, etc.)
She’s been hinting at adding cruise control for the past few weeks. I’m a DIY guy, so naturally, I bought the kit (HD Part 41000369) and installed.
I made an appointment for Saturday for the dealer to activate the cruise on their shop computer, as the Harley website and the parts salesperson advised it must be activated by the dealership to actually use the ‘cruise control features.’.
However, tonight I thought I’d try it anyway to see what happens when you attempt to activate cruise without a dealer flash.
Lo and behold - the cruise works fine WITHOUT a dealer flash.
Has anyone else experienced this on a 2017 or newer softail when adding the Harley cruise control kit?
Obviously, I bought the bike used, and it did not include the cruise control switches. It is possible that a prior owner bought the bike, installed cruise, then uninstalled it - but I find that scenario VERY unlikely given the steps needed to install on a softail slim (run wires internally, remove gas tank, etc.)
Why is it working without the dealer flash? Is the flash an excuse by Harley to charge some additional labor charges when someone has the dealership perform the install?
Has anyone else tried to install and use the cruise control kit on a 2016 or newer softail without the dealership flash? Did it work or give an error message of some kind? Did it simply do nothing when you hit the cruise switch?

haha, i had exactly this happen on my 2017 slim a few weeks ago, after installing new bars and cruise control switch block...
Took it into dealer to get the cruise enabled in the ecu, they hooked up the doo dad and to their surprise, it already was enabled..
I then recalled on the initial test ride after fitting the bars, I must have bumped the cruise button whilst hitting the left indicator, then noticed an orange light on the speedo...
Which I'd not seen before. thinking I had messed up something in the wiring etc? Could have saved me the trip to the dealer if I had just tried it out.

Don’t forget pushing the cruise control button-that makes 5 ways.
