Default riser mounted tach issue

I'm wanting to switch bars and risers on my 05 deluxe. I currently have 14" wild1s with the stock 4.5" pullback risers and riser mounted tach. I'm looking to put 18" hcc Jarheads on and will need to stay 2" or so (preferably 1.5) with risers to avoid any cable swapping. I see tons of risers in the right hight and price range but none say if they are compatible with the oem top clamp with tach mounted. am I going to need to relocate the tach and replace top clamp or are there compatible risers out there? I've seen the aftermarket mini tach but prefer the bigger one so if I had to move it I'd like to find a mount to put it on bars.

suggestions?

Many risers use the OEM clamp, bolt pattern... but then again, some do not...

Was that helpful or what?

Might pay to call who ever you plan to buy the risers from, or else make sure they are returnable, if you find the bolt pattern doesn't match up.

Good luck with your mod....

I think the drag specialties 1.5 in straight risers are going to work. I'm guessing I will need shorter riser bolts but Google isn't helping. all the results I'm getting are for diameter and thread.

will I need shorter bolts or am I overthinking things again?

You should be fine with your OEM bolts & mounting hardware...

As you can see in this parts diagram, the OEM 2005 softail risers of all sizes (springer risers not shown as they are different) use the same mounting hardware and bolt #3471

Where might I find a diagram like that that list part numbers for all of that? As long as the handlebars and risers measure pretty true to the manufacture descriptions then you should go pretty smoothly the new set-up should only be about an inch taller than the old setup so I shouldn't have to mess with cables or brake hoses. Worst case scenario I would have to swap out the throttle cables but I'm pretty sure they have more than enough.

I'm currently trying to figure out what sort of connectors I need to make the new bars Plug and Play Rather than cannibalizing the set that is on it now.

I found this set of switches that comes with 70 in of wire. I figure that with that and the right set of connectors I should be able to just cut it 2 length install the connectors and be ready to go before I ever take the other bars off.

Parts finder here...

http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.....asp?make=hdmc

Enter your year then look for your model... it will bring up parts pictures of the various systems listed under your model...

I use these wire extensions anytime I do a handlebar change, when longer wires are needed....

https://namzcustomcycleproducts.com/...yourself-kits/

The CanBus bikes are super easy.. on your year, you'll need to learn to unpin the various connectors involved, then re-pin them after running wires... not really hard once you get the feel for it...

The HD Service manual for your year/model bike, has a section in the back, telling you what connectors are used and how to unpin & re-pin those connectors..

The extensions you posted should work, but if you look close, I believe you may find pins attached to the ends of the wires. If you trim the wires, or if the wires don't come with them, you will need to add pins to the end of the wires that will fit into the connector they are using...

Again not a hard job, but different connectors need different pins & often different crimpers...

I have the various crimpers & pins needed for most of the different connectors used on the twin cam Harleys; Molex, Deutsch, Mini-Deutsch, AMP Multi-lock, and Packard connectors... The types of connectors used seems to vary a little, between the various years of the twin cam bikes.... it takes some time/money to collect those various tools/parts and learn to use them...

Good luck with your mod...

So not only did I get the wrong risers but I didn't figure it out until I already had everything unhooked. The risers I bought are for the style of clam that has the rear to bolts closer together than the outer two bolts while my top clamp has the bolts equally spaced like a letter H. The worst part is I can't even seem to find any other risers that use the style of clamp I have and I'm not sure that the bolt holes on the other style of clam would be the right distance apart for the tach mount so I'm stuck in limbo bike on the jack with no bars untill I figure it out

I'm not even very picky I'm just looking for something that is compatible with clamp mounted tach, Chrome, straight, 1" bar at clamp area, and between 1˝ to 3 in tall and preferably under $100

if I can't find something in the next couple of days I'm going to need to decide between completely eliminating the tachometer, trying to figure out how to install one of the cheap mini tachometers, or spending almost three hundred bucks for one of the Plug and Play speedometer tach combos. Either way the priority is having a functional bike again ASAP.

if anyone could point me in the right direction to a set that are in stock somewhere and ready to go I would really really really appreciate it

so riser problem is solved but to do that I had to switch from inline 3.5" clamp bolts to offset which means the tach can't go back on the clamp.

n order of preference, I either need to:

1. find a bracket or clamp that will fit this tach and mount it to the bars

2. buy a new tach that clamps to bars.

3. eliminate this tach and upgrade to the analog hd speedo/tach combo

If I get a new tach, I really want to stick to one that wires up the same way this one does.

Hey Outlaw
Was wondering what you ended up doing with your tach situation? I too would like to relocate my riser mounted tach to accommodate a batwing fairing. Is there any options besides a speedo tach combo etc? Thanks in advance.
