The engine # is an abbreviated version of the VIN
They do not "match"

We don`t know what you are seeing...The numbers will not be an exact match, there is a different amount of digits in engine serial number.

The engine serial number is not a VIN.

The 6 speed transmission came out in 2006 on Dyna models, all other models had the 5 speed transmission.

The registration will tell you what model year the bike is, and the vin that is stamped on the frame can also be decoded to determine the model year.

Why do you think the bike is an `06, did the dealer tell you that the bike is an `06?

What year does the title say? Maybe somebody changed out the transmission.

If it truly is an 06, the 10th digit of the VIN will be a 6 (7 for 07)
An 06 would be an 88" unless it has been altered (95"conv) and a 5 sp

Your 06 Deluxe has a Twin Cam 88 with a 5 speed transmission, the same as my 06 Heritage Classic.

Edited to add. It is possible that the previous owner installed a big bore kit in it punching the engine to 95-98 cubic inches.

I say you definitely need more documentation from the deal or PO on this bike. All roads lead to TC88 n 5 Speed.

I've always been amazed at some of the stuff that people report on these forums, that comes out of the mouths of Harley Dealership salesman/employees....

Some of the salesman/employees are brilliant. They are walking encyclopedias of information on Harley makes/models/equipment....

Some, I'm sure, are misquoted, or customers misunderstand what they have been told.

But there are an alarming amount of dealership employees that truly seem to know very little about MoCo products. They're just saying whatever it takes to make a sale...
