Speedometer issue
I have a 2008 Heritage Classic. My issue is the speedometer is reading 65 mph faster then what I am running. Going to work this morning I was running 55 and the speedo was pegged at 120. The wife kept the speed. Everything I have searched is a non reading speedo and it stalls. Mine has a high reading speedo, no stalling and doesn't do the needle sing when the ignition is turned on.. The only thing I did different was put the Maverick 2-2 tune on it. I checked the speed sensor wires under the seat and used dielectric lube on the terminals. Still didn't get a needle swing. Any ideas when I get home?
You mentioned two things in your trouble shooting. You reloaded your tune, and checked/cleaned the connector to the VSS....
As far as the tune goes, I apologize, but know nothing about the tune you are referencing. What is a "Maverick 2-2" tune....?
If it is a flashed tune, there is a table in the ECM that controls the speed displayed in the speedo. It measures the pulses from the VSS. You can adjust your speedo accuracy by changing the pulse number... With a PowerVision tuner, you can adjust it via the quick tune section, it's a four digit number.. I mention this because it's possible that your tune has the wrong number for the VSS pulses and is throwing that calibration all off... If that number in your tune is off, no matter how many times you re-flash it, it will be the same...
You mentioned checking the VSS wiring. Was that recently changed or disconnected? Sometimes, you can pull the VSS out of the trans, and it will have a bunch of debris on it. Cleaning it off and reinstalling it, has fixed some people's VSS issues...
However, since the speedo is pegged, that suggests an issue with the speedo itself. Does it peg immediately when the bike is turned on or only when the bike is in motion? Any recent electrical wiring work? Did you recently disconnect any wiring? Maybe to the speedo itself? Sometimes when you disconnect/reconnect one of the connectors, the pins don't always go back together correctly, or with good contact.
Good luck with the diagnosis and let us know what you find...

No wiring added or changed. The speedo pegs while n motion. I only unplugged the vss to make sure it was clean and connected good. Haven't messed with the speedo wiring. Haven't got that far yet.
Thanks for the additional info...
Does the speedo "initiate" when you first turn on the ignition switch, prior to starting?
If so, and everything was working properly before adding the new tune, I would suspect the new tune has the wrong multiplier in the VSS table... Since I am unfamiliar with your tune, I can't advise how to check that...
No it does not sweep when ignition is turned on, but it has all the lights, (oil fuel engine) and 6th gear light as well. As for the tune I am using fuelpak3. The maverick is a pipe the has close dimensions to mine. I replaced it from a previous map that I know the speedo work, but it didn't change.

My two twin cam softails, '01 carb & '03 EFI, both do the same thing.... when the ignition is turned on, the speedo needle, which is on "0", actually goes backwards about a 1/4", a hum is heard, and then it goes back to "0".... I don't know if things changed in later years, prior to the 2011 CanBus softails..... If your speedo is supposed to initiate like my speedos, and it's not doing it, that suggests the speedo, or power to the speedo, as the issue... if you have access to one, it may be time to consult an HD electronic diagnostic manual..
It seems you have eliminated the tune as the culprit, since a prior working tune doesn't work now...

The speedo still work, just extremely high readings. 50mph reads 120mph. All lights work, but when it initializes it only goes to 10 back to zero. There is power at the Speedo, but I don't believe the correct amount. I have a VSS coming in Wednesday. I will try that.
Well changed the VSS, speedo still running high. Unhooked the speedo, blowed out the connector, made sure everything was tight, still the same thing. Running extremely higher than I actually am. I don't know what else to look for. How would I tell if the speedo is the issue? I am leading a big ride next week and I kind of need to know how fast we are going. lol
For speed info, you could always use a 'nav' app on your phone or even an actual GPS like a Garmin Nuvi.
good luck,
T.
